Ukraine v Russia War Thread

Russian flags flying in Kiev, they have basically taken over.

Ukraine has to stand and fight or it wont cost Russia anything and will embolden Putin.  And it doesnt give NATO much headwind to help a country that wont stand up for itself.

Is this the first war between industrialized countries since WW2?

Meaning, not Vietnam or Afghanistan, but one where the two main combatants are both industrialized?

I wouldnt call Iraq an 1st world industrialized nation.  

But might be the closest thing.

i'd probably agree.  That was just the ONE situation that may be considered a war between industrialized countries since WWII.

That isn't an invasion.  THIS is an invasion and one that doesn't bother you a bit.  Why didn't you want the "largest, most advanced military in the world" to stop this invasion of our country?

I appreciate the attempt.  Just amazing to think of something like this happening for the first time since WW2.

If sanctions/retribution is not harsh enough, might as well put Georgia, the Stans, and Armenia on the clock.  He would never attack NATO, but everything else is on the table, especially with China having his back.  Russia didnt really have that during the cold war.  They make a very powerful combo.

And Putin will owe China one when they invade Taiwan.

What Russia and China are demonstrating is that challenging a global hegemony does not require you to be particularly strong. It just requires the hegemony to be weak, bloated, and self-obsessed.

Well they both can be but why are Americans so upset and ready to fight over one that has almost no effect on them and yet indifferent to one that will have a massive effect on their own country.  Americans trying to physically stop the invasion of their country were threatened with arrest and no one, especially in the media cared a bit.

I am fine with whatever level of authoritarianism it takes to restrain and eliminate evil.  What we are seeing today in America is an authoritarian government spreading evil and restraining those who want to stop it.

Current thoughts on Ukraine;

1. I dont want to be world police, but this is different. This is a 1st world country attacking another because it can. Its Germany/Poland all over. Dangerous to not respond.

2. I hope the Ukrainians stand and fight. They cant collapse in a day.

3. Ill be pissed if we send billions in weapons over there and they just lay down thier arms and the Russians swoop in in take them. Its like arming our enemies.

4. Like Ala said, Mitt was right. We can never forget that Russia and China are 1 guy away from WW3.

5. We need to understand that autocratic regimes dont play by the rules that democracies do. We sometimes forget that to our own detriment.

6. This is a big moment for Biden. If he shows strength and resolve, it will massively help him. And the media will of course trumpet his success. But this is a real opportunity for him to reverse the Afghan debacle.

So, back to sanity.....

On a positive note, at least Trump was all buddy-buddy with Putin, so this didn't happen during his presidency.  Just imagine the level of escalation and risk if it were Trump and Putin, as enemies, in the current situation.
