K9BuckProsperity Christians
#1
I belong to a private Facebook Christian group.  I'm rather shocked by the huge numbers of what I will call "prosperity Christians" who believe that, if they pray, God will give them material riches.  For instance, one guy created a post with the following and received a couple of hundred "likes". Here is what he wrote:

I see God surprising someone with a new house, car key, healings, promotions, visa, breakthrough, credit alert, etc before the end of this week. Mark my word, if I be a true servant of God, you will call for family celebration very soon. Your miracle is on the way.

It's particularly pronounced among African Christians.  Check this out:

I posted this, but it needs to be approved by one of their moderators in order to be published:

I've noticed that a lot of Christians in this group view their relationship with Jesus as a means to material prosperity in this world. It seems that, to them, Jesus is like a genie in a bottle that one summons to give them material wealth. That is a demonic lie. Jesus came to spread the good news and to give us a path to eternal salvation in the world that is to come, not this world. Be thankful to Jesus for his gift of life and his promise of deliverance from evil and death and stop viewing him as your lucky charm. God bless you.

Creflo Dollar comes to mind, amongst others. People at those churches/of that belief seem to forget Jesus going postal on the money hangers in the Temple.

Great point.

Now STX, give me 5 Hail Marys and 5 Our Fathers and YOU will be entered to win the following from Jesus!

A new Car!

Kind of puzzled about the “credit alert” part. Lol

There is truth behind the “prosperity” message. Several verses in scripture speak on it.

“Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.””
‭‭Luke‬ ‭6:38‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

“But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.”
‭‭II Corinthians‬ ‭9:6-7‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

And others. So there is truth there. (Also those scriptures are not only money based.) It just gets so blown out of proportion and so over the top promoted that it makes the message look bad. There is no sin in being wealthy even as a Pastor or Church Leader. Someone has to finance the work of the kingdom. But you are correct in the fact that Christ came to bring us back into a relationship with the Father, not give us a Maserati.

Tbh, the prosperity gospel is probably more destructive to people than any other current iteration. The idea that everything to do with relationship with God relates to Him giving us material blessings is just anti-Biblical. It creates a culture of Jobâ€s friends wondering what someone has done to displease God when they donâ€t have all the material stuff.

No longer GroupThink 'woke'.  but it was fun while it lasted.

Well somebody pushed me into purchasing that $500 dollar Lotto Scratchy ticket Sunday night. I was debating it internally and I just got a feeling that I should spend $5 more and go forth and win.

I've taken to praying that God's will be done rather than for specific actions to happen.

I agree. Honestly I know K9 mentioned the black church but Iâ€ve saw it promoted way more in the white church. Iâ€ve said before that the white church needs to stop preaching prosperity and the black church needs to stop preaching social justice and both need to just preached message of the kingdom.
Again there is truth in both messages but those are not the focus of the gospel. God will supply all our needs but we donâ€t “need” a Corvette.
Pretty sure the disciples had to leave everything to follow Christ, I doubt leaving your fishing business or whatever career behind, would have made them rich.

I know K9 mentioned the black church...

When I said "African Christians", I was referring to Christians living in Africa.  Prosperity Christianity is very big over there, or so I learned.

I don't think there's anything wrong with asking God to help with legitimate issues. Praying to God to make one filthy rich while hundreds of millions do without is, undoubtedly, displeasing to God.
