Agreed, as does SCOTUS.

Quote:but simply having a knife isn't any more of a threat than simply carrying a gun.

This is actually not correct. Because the 2nd amendment exists, guns essentially have a pass in society that other weapons are not afforded. Carrying knives is actually illegal in many places where carrying guns is perfectly legal, and are often treated with harsher penalties.

I wasn't talking legalities.  I was talking about the assumption of a threat.  A person carrying a gun, knife, baseball bat, etc isn't automatically a threat.  They may be breaking the law, in the case of a knife, but that isn't the same a being a threat.

An armed criminal fleeing police going into an area where there are people can be assumed to be a threat.

So, let's sharpen this up a bit so the picture is painted accurately:

A old, wheelchair-bound man with a knife, who was suspected of shoplifting a toolbox, rolling away from police at about 2 mph and going into an area where there are people can be assumed to be a threat.

If this cop gets off, particularly given that his partner was standing a foot from the "criminal" and apparently didn't feel the slightest bit threatened, then there may literally never be another scenario where police can't claim a threat in Tucson.

Well all were living in Tucson so I'm not expected the cop or the perp to be too bright. Probably ooh of eh grads.

Lots of trash in Tucson. A widespread purge would do that place wonders.

That video didnt look good. Just ran right up and started shooting. Other cop was there and seemed in control of situation.

If 1st cop decided to shoot, Id have a bit more understanding since he's been there while time.

But stupid guy played with fire and got burnt.

The best part.... after putting 8 bullets in a disabled senior citizen, they then handcuffed him.

Richards immediately fell out of his chair as Remington rushed toward him and handcuffed the man, who remained crumpled on the ground.

Tucson police to fire officer who fatally shot a man in a wheelchair 9 times from behind

TUCSON, Ariz. — Police said Tuesday a Tucson officer would be fired after video showed him fatally shoot a man in a motorized wheelchair while confronting him over allegedly shoplifting.

Surveillance video of the Monday shooting shows Richard Lee Richards, 61, entering a Lowe's in a wheelchair before an officer, later identified as Ryan Remington, fires his gun nine times at Richards' back and side. Richards was pronounced dead shortly afterward.

Before Richards entered the Lowe's, a Walmart employee had reported Richards was suspected of shoplifting a toolbox, Tucson police chief Chris Magnus said Tuesday at a news conference. When asked to show a receipt, the Walmart employee told police that Richards pulled out a knife and said, "Here's your receipt."

Remington was working off-duty as security at Walmart and has been with the department for four years. Magnus said Tuesday that Remington would be fired.

Here's what we know.

What the video of the Tucson police shooting shows

After Richards left the Walmart store, Remington followed him around the parking lot and can be seen on video calling for backup.

Officer Stephanie Taylor responded, arriving at the scene as Remington was approaching Richards near the Lowe's entrance. Footage from her body-worn camera shows her run out of her vehicle toward Richards.

"You need to stop," someone is heard saying, and then, "He's got his knife in his other hand."

As Remington says, "Do not go to the store, sir," Taylor draws her gun, too.

A former Arizona officer was indicted after fatally shooting a man in a wheelchair

Ryan Remington, 32, was accused of “recklessly” causing the death of Richard Lee Richards, 61, in the Nov. 30 shooting outside a Tucson Loweâ€s.

A former Arizona police officer who fatally shot a man in a motorized wheelchair last year was indicted for manslaughter, according to court documents released Thursday.

Ryan Remington, 32, was accused of “recklessly” causing the death of Richard Lee Richards, 61, in the Nov. 30 shooting outside a Tucson Lowe's, according to a copy of the indictment obtained by NBC affiliate KVOA of Tucson.

Remington, who started working with the Tucson Police Department in 2017, was fired earlier this year after an internal probe into the shooting.
