Copycatting is the real deal. These troubled children probably associate with columbine as a way to resolve things as opposed to their counterparts who might be more prone to do it "on the corner".

I presume black kids get picked on too, but they don't shoot up their schools.

Black kids shoot other people in the streets. No need to shoot up a school and get caught. They don't have the death wish these troubled white kids have.

Probably a myth like the psycho serial killer myth. Blacks are 13% of the population. I'd be surprised if they don't comprise at least that proportion of school shooters.

Well most school shootings happen in suburban and rural schools. Itâ€s a numbers thing. I found this report on a study about this topic. I havenâ€t looked at original study and am not claiming itâ€s credibility. But, itâ€s an attempt to answer the question.

They aren't black.  They are "teens".  Also when a black student shoots up a school, like Timothy Simpkins in Texas, he gets out of jail within hours with low bail.  He was just having a bad day and we need to understand.  He is a good kid, just a little troubled.

Lots of blacks shoot kids at school, but it gets labeled as gang violence and isn't reported on in the same manner, but the stats back it up, especially on playground/basketball court areas.

Those are probably targeted shootings.  It SEEMS that white students are much more likely to shoot many students at random.  Maybe I am misinformed.

I went to a HS at the time was about 96% white. Half of them from middle to lower middle class suburbs and the other half from rural areas. I'm willing to bet all of the guys had a knife of some sort on them. Probably a lot of the girls too. I carried my trusty Boy Scout knife for example, but at times I had the longer, sharper pocket knife my grandfather gave me. 4" blade could do serious damage if someone was so inclined.
This was a low performing school. Of course there were fights, in fact, it was common. But in 4 years I was there, plus the 4 years my brother was there following me, no one got stabbed. Some had rifles in gun racks in the back inside of their pickups. No one got got shot. No one revealed having a gun inside the school that I know of.

So what changed?

Two suggestions: First, Guns became more of threat as they were demonized by liberals as a means to get back at conservatives. In a sense, guns were "weaponized" and thus, more valued or glamorized as a means to settle a dispute or to spread fear.
Second, media became more prevalent. We had three channels on TV. Now there are thousands, and all are looking for clickbait-ish content. And then guns become even a more important target of liberals, and even more "glamorized" as an element of control. Add in Twitter and it all becomes globally known instantly. That's a pretty potent incentive for a kid with a score to settle.
