I have heard it mentioned that Minnesota has different standards than most states for 2nd and 3rd degree though.  I personally donâ€t know what they are; I just know itâ€s sort of unusual

Minnesota's 2nd degree murder has two clauses that could theoretically apply to the situation.

1. Intentionally murdered Floyd without premeditation
2. Unintentionally murdered Floyd while in the process of committing a felony

To my knowledge, the prosecution never tried to argue intent, as that is a high bar to cross, so let's assume it was the second one. The prosecution should have had to prove Chauvin was in the process of committing a felony. Well, he was doing his job (whether he did it poorly or not is irrelevant). It would be hard to argue he was in the process of committing a felony. So, I really have no idea where the standing for 2nd degree murder was.

Third degree murder is even more out in left field. It is a "depraved heart" murder, generally reserved for doing things that are very likely to cause the death of someone, but not anyone in particular. Examples being, shooting a gun into a crowd for fun, and someone dies. Handing out piles of drugs to a group of people and someone OD's and dies, throwing bricks off an overpass at cars, etc.

I would like to ask why you/we don't identify as white? 
We (as a fellow white male) seem to be the only ones who cant have racial pride or identity.  I dont often think of myself as white either, but why not?  Everyone else seems to identify primarily with their race/color, why dont whites do it?

Seems he was committing felonious assault when he was restraining Floyd, which allowed the 2nd degree murder.  Seems like a serious stretch to me, but not the jurors.

I could see the 3rd degree if they said he had depraved indifference to Floyds plight and situation.

Because you have been conditioned and brainwashed out of your racial identity like most other white Americans.  Instead you have been infused with "white guilt" which makes you ashamed of your race in spite of the fact your race founded the country and built it to the greatest country in history.

Then why wasn't felonious assault one of the things he was charged with? Felonious assault requires "substantial bodily harm", and since the trachea or neck weren't damaged (per the medical examiners' reports), and he had no broken bones or anything, I'm not sure how anyone could argue he caused substantial bodily harm.

The depraved indifference has to be not targeted against a particular person for it to be murder in the 3rd degree. The prosecution took it off the table because it didn't apply, until the Minnesota AG made them put the charge back on for optics.

The fact that the jury didn't understand these statutes enough to see they don't apply should be enough, alone, to warrant mistrial. They didn't even ask the judge to clarify anything in their 10 hours of deliberation.

Yeah, me too.  I "proud" of my Scots-Irish heritage, I guess.  More proud to be an American.  Havent much thought of being proud to be white, but I do appreciate all the many awesome things we as whites have created.

But it is weird, because most other races seem to have as their major designation as their race.  And their racial accomplishments are constantly extolled.  And I agree with HT in that we are not supposed to/allowed to be proud of being white.  I wonder why, when everyone else can be proud of themselves.

Thats what I was asking George and others.  Why the difference.

Nor I.  I was who I was.  And the older I get, the less I care about what others say....

I attribute it to a human trait of a need for conflict.  We have such an easy life that we have to search for conflict and they've ginned up conflict in intersectionality/identity politics/and the like.

If you describe me Iâ€m a tall, bald, white guy. Thatâ€s what I am. But, Iâ€ve never had to think about my race in positive or negative. Itâ€s never hindered me. I suppose I could find ways it helped me, but, thatâ€s a pointless exercise. I donâ€t feel any kind of kinship with anyone because theyâ€re white. I have nieces and nephews that are biracial. Iâ€ll kill a person before I let someone do them harm. When I was an athlete, team is all that mattered. As a coach, Iâ€d play anyone that helped me win.

I also had a psychopath father that who was as racist as anyone Iâ€ve come across. Since I decided he was the worst human I have ever met, I do most everything opposite of him to resounding success.

Call it brainwashing. Call it lack of pride(not sure why thatâ€s a thing). My individual effort has put me where I am today more so than the color of my skin.

Bottom line, I donâ€t care about the color of my skin as it isnâ€t part of who I am.
