Seeing the view of a conflict from both sides is always instructive.

Anything Shelby Foote that you can read or watch is from a southern perspective on the Civil War.

yes, agree.  We have an author on here writing on civil war and he was not too interested in Foote.  I'm reading one by Clifford Dowdey and it's well put together.

Yeah, but the slave states that remained loyal to the Union were initially exempt from the Emancipation Proclamation.

True in that it all wasnâ€t 100% true blue Boy Scouts vs a 100% evil empire like a lot of people like to make things out to be long after the fact

I donâ€t really go to any sites per se. There is a library app called Hoopla that I get audiobooks and e-books from, and their history selection, military and otherwise, is phenomenal. Right now Iâ€m listening to a book called A Handful of Hard Men:The SAS In Rhodesia, about their ultimately futile battle against Robert Mugabe. Aside from the gay porn sounding title it is a hell of a book.
The app has just about any kind of military history book that you might be interested in, from the Romans to ISIS and everything in between.
If you have a library card in the US-or can get someone to let you use theirâ€s, you can access the app, although the Chinese interwebz might make it difficult.

This is true-but any Missourian or Delaware or Kentucky person with slaves knew the gig was up. The slave states that stayed in the union were not dependent on cotton plantations-and the constant expansion thereof-for their economies.

Thank you, I should definitely look into that.

But to stay on topic, history.army.mil has a great collection of artifacts, essays and papers.

I have been to that site and it does indeed have some good info. I have also found several other sites that were were set up by individual military buffs to write about topics they are interested in. Some are quite good, but the 1990's website they use don't encourage interaction and often these "old' guys don't keep their sites updated. One for example had a great description of the Battle of Salamis and some good images of what the bay looked like with diagrams of how the fleets moved during the course of the battle. Stuff like that is great.

Saying the war between the states was just about slavery is like saying the War for Independence was about taxes on tea.  Northerners lied about the slavery issue from the day the country was founded and keep lying about it up to today.

I'm not familiar with the Clifford Dowdey book.

Hmmm, I need to check this out, sounds good. I'm pretty sure my son has a library card, he shares some of his dad's curiosity traits.

As to internet access, I have a fairly reliable VPN, but even then access is still a bit limited. Despite what people think, VPN's are not magic get-everything buttons.

Then pray tell what could be the primary reason?

Well, I are a graduate of the Derek Zoolander Center For Kids That Can't Read Good And Wanna Do Other Stuff Good Too. In fact, I was in the top 75% of my class.

"states rights."   Rolleyes
Moved to Alabama in 1995. Had an elective left before graduation and so I decided that since I was going to live here, Iâ€d take an Alabama history class at UAB.  Margaret Armbruster...she wrote the book so to speak. First time I was introduced to “states rights” as an alternative to slavery for the causation of the Civil War. Needless to say I was fascinated.

Then I met others.

War and peace. Itâ€s a great read that gives a Russian perspective of the Napoleonic Wars in the early 1800s. Itâ€s not a war history per se.....but it was written by a military man who wrote well, if not ridiculously long.
