ChinaBuckMilky Way photographs over 12 years
#1
Photographer Spends 12 Years, 1250 Hours, Exposing Photo of Milky Way (petapixel.com)

If you ever look up at the sky and wonder what's out there, this is a collection of long exposure photographs taken over 12 years. It's incredible. Make sure you click on the individual images so you can enlarge them to see the "detail." This will not work well on a phone, get to your laptop or desktop. Uncountable numbers of individual stars can be seen. And this is just one part of the Milky Way. It got my mind racing over the potential for life to have arisen elsewhere. The other thing, the ununderstandable scale of our galaxy. And then you start thinking that our galaxy is one tiny grain of sand compared to the rest of the universe, the observable universe!

The part that is hard to comprehend is that these new photos of distant objects are of things so far in the past that they are largely irrelevant today.  Some of the light from the stars we see visibly today was initiated from its source when dinosaurs were still in existence here and yet we just now seeing it.

But yet we are convinced we are the only intelligent live form anywhere in the Universe.

Every time I see something like this, it truly is amazing. Like HT said, the light from some of the stars that we see today began during the early years of our planets life. For all we know the stars and maybe even part of the solar system is not there any more. Truly amazing!

Who hasn't set around a campfire and pondered the concept of infinity? If there is an end to the Universe, doesn't there still have to be something else that starts there?
