Interesting short history of how pi was calculated over the centuries. I did not realize that the ancient Babylonians and Egyptians had a concept of pi.
Perhaps some of you remember Aaron Craft had memorized pi to 100 digits. To give you how far that is in significance mathematically, the article notes you only have to use pi to the 39 digit to calculate the width of the diameter of an atom at the extent of the observable universe.

Architecturally, we normally only go to fourth digit, but sometimes as much as six. After that, given the dimensions that materials come in, itâ€s no longer useful.

I just imagine the discovery process.  Probably were making circles with a rope or something and "Fred," for some weird reason, decided to look at the ratio of C to D.  Then he did it on a few more circles and...   mind blown.  Guy probably had no idea as to the significance of that basic discovery.  I'm sure his boss probably later took credit for it.  I mean, some things in life never change.   Wink

It better be an apple pi to commemorate Isaac Newtonâ€s contribution to the value of pi. By the way, he invented calculus to help to advance his mathematical concepts. He was 23 years old at the time., during a pandemic since he had to stay inside too. At about the same time, Leibniz also invented calculus also on his own. At 23 my greatest accomplishment was winning a beer chugging contest.

That sort of process is likely what led to the idea. When i was in architecture school we had this elderly professor that thought history. He especially enjoyed speaking about the techniques used to construct various famous structures and the trial and error methods that were considered. Loved that class.
