Hightop77What happened to Archie Miller?
#1
What worked at Dayton didn't work at Indiana.

BOZICH | At Indiana, the question has shifted from NCAA Tournament to Archie Miller's future

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The question surrounding the Indiana University menâ€s basketball program has changed.
People have stopped wondering if the lifeless Hoosiers will make the 2021 NCAA Tournament (they wonâ€t), and started asking if coach Archie Miller should return for his fifth season (his $10 million buyout looks like his primary lifesaver).
The guy who will need to appear at the season-ending press conference isnâ€t Miller.

Itâ€s athletic director Scott Dolson, whoâ€ll have to look at his books, make a honest assessment and deliver the call.
In their last two games, the Hoosiers have coughed up double-digit, first-half leads and been routed by a pair of second-division Big Ten teams.

Thatâ€s not the performance of a team that belongs in the NCAA Tournament. Thatâ€s the look of a program that is racing toward the bottom of the Big Ten for the third consecutive season, perhaps as low as 12th place in 2021.
The Hoosiers are losing games. Make it five of their last eight for a program that has failed to win three straight Big Ten games for two seasons.
Couldnâ€t beat Northwestern at home. Couldnâ€t beat Rutgers anywhere. Havenâ€t beaten Purdue during the Miller Era.
Theyâ€re losing the fan base. The message boards are pure arsenic, with an occasional serving of apathy. The former is difficult to swallow. The latter will actually kill what remains of the tattered Indiana brand.
And, after the 11-point loss to Rutgers Wednesday, Miller sounded like a coach who has lost his locker room.
He admitted his team was “fractured.” He used a lot of words that certainly sounded like a coach concerned his players had quit in the second half.
If you roll the second-half video, youâ€ll certainly see a team that surrendered. The Scarlet Knights dunked on the Hoosiers. They fast-breaked on the Hoosiers. They trash-talked the Hoosiers. And at times they laughed at the Hoosiers.
Indianaâ€s response?
The Hoosiers took it.
Itâ€s a poorly coached and motivated group.
For Indianaâ€s guards throwing a 3-foot entry pass has become more difficult than throwing 35-yard post patterns into the wind. When the Rutgers guards got physical, Indiana looked for the exit ramp.
Air balls average more than one per half. Shooters fail to square their feet to the basket or place their toes as close as possible to the 3-point line. Basketball 101 stuff.

At crunch time, Indiana has a habit of disappearing faster than Jimmy Hoffa.
Free throw shooting has cost Indiana at least two wins. Three-point shooting has improved but itâ€s never been at the level of elite offensive teams.

Defense was supposed to be Millerâ€s calling card. Itâ€s the reason he coached Dayton to 4 consecutive NCAA Tournaments, including an Elite Eight and a Sweet 16. Thatâ€s the reason former IU athletic director Fred Glass settled on Miller for the job.
On Saturday, Michigan State scored 52 second-half points on the Hoosiers, a week after the Spartans scored 58 points in an entire game against Iowa.
On Wednesday, Rutgers scored 27 points in the final 10 minutes of the first half, igniting a humiliating stretch where the Scarlet Knights outscored IU, 62-27.
Not Michigan.
Not Illinois.
Not Ohio State.
Iâ€m talking about Rutgers, a team that scored 59 points in its previous game, a loss to Maryland.
What worked at Dayton is not working at Indiana — and hasnâ€t, really, since Millerâ€s first game, the night when Indiana allowed 17 3-point field goals and lost to Indiana State by 21.
These ongoing issues cannot be blamed on the talent Miller inherited from former IU coach Tom Crean. This canâ€t be pinned on players who were not interested in following the script, the way it was with guys who left IU after last season.
These are Millerâ€s guys who have been brought up in Millerâ€s system — and watched Indiana get left behind by programs led by coaches who have not been on the job longer than Miller has been in Bloomington.
Iâ€m talking about Juwan Howard, who has Michigan atop the Big Ten in his second season. Brad Underwood (Illinois) and Chris Holtmann (Ohio State) started in their jobs the same season Miller started in Bloomington.

The Wolverines, Illini and Buckeyes are rolling. The Hoosiers are floundering, 12-11 overall, 7-9 in the Big Ten.
They have 3 games to stop floundering — and they wonâ€t be favored in any of them.
There is a Saturday home finale against Michigan, which looks like a Final Four team.
There is a Tuesday trip to East Lansing to play a Michigan State team, which appeared to be energized by its dazzling comeback win over Indiana last Saturday.
And, there is a March 6 visit to Purdue, which has treated Indiana like the junior varsity since Millerâ€s arrival.
Itâ€s no longer a question of whether Indiana will make the NCAA Tournament. Itâ€s a question of whether Archie Miller should return for a fifth season.

Yeah, he has failed.  B1G is full of teams that scrap and fight every game.  It's a rough group of teams.  You better recruit guys who can tough it out and be ready to duke it out with some strength and endurance.   I saw that last night in E Lansing as MSU just clawed Ohio State and they didn't have it in last 4 minutes at all.   Losing Kyle Young was evident.

What I do like though it what is coming back to that team and what will be added.  Indiana will take piss pounding from Ohio State next year too.

Same thing that has happened to every Hoosier coach since Bobby Knight.

MSU does not deserve to make the tourney either.

I've seen it in football and basketball both.  A guy produces better teams at a lower level school than he does at a place with vastly more resources and prestige.  Bozich even mentions the lack of fundamentals that IU exhibits under Miller in a way you never saw at Dayton.

Developing mediocre players into a cohesive team is a completely different skill set than coaching five star divas.

Dantonio was a better coach at Michigan State than Saban was. He would probably suck at Bama.

At a Dayton you are more likely to take a chance on a talented player that has attitude issues than you would at Indiana.  You have to take guys that fly under the radar for whatever reason because you aren't getting any McD AA's there.  Some have more upside.

I don't think so.  I think the biggest problem Indiana has is being under contract with Adidas.  Louisville made the same mistake.  It definitely hurts your ability to recruit the best players.  Nike rules the roost.

If thatâ€s true, how pathetic that is that the corporate logo is one of your
decisions as a player. But then again, Iâ€m not surprised.

Yes. And Iâ€m happy to see it. After firing Knight they deserve to suck forever.

A lot of 5 stars get hype from the underwear camps-some are nasty on the field, but Dantonio was able to find find ballers who flew under the radar. I remember watching Sparty beat Stanford in the Rose Bowl a few years ago and being like “Sparty and Stanford both have black players, but Spartyâ€s are all darker dudes named DaShawn and Darquez while Stanfordâ€s are all lighter dudes named Tyler”. That was a badass secondary Dantonio had that year, with no big name recruits.
