ScarletHayesFree HBO this weekend so I watched...

...the first 3 episodes of that miniseries, Chernobyl.  There's only 5 episodes, so if you have YT and think you might be into it hurry up before the weekend is out.

Anyway, one thing becomes immediately clear from living in a socialistic state like that.  Cover.  Your.  Azz. and party/state first is simply the reality those people lived under.  Plant engineers would be asked what they saw and they were told over and over again that that didn't happen.  Impossible, you didn't see that!  The main thing the engineers were saying was that the core exploded.  So while I'm sure a lot of the doubt of them was science/experience based, the bosses stubbornly would not believe them which caused critical lost time and probably killed many more people than it had to.  The core was blown wide open.  There was graphite everywhere.  Yet the plant bigwigs wouldn't acknowledge it.  They ignored it to the point where outside people came and measured the radiation near the plant and they (the deniers)  were then "sent to party head quarters."  Ahem.

The cultish like behavior of denying objective reality was really striking, and it's something that concerns me about what may be heading in our direction.

Either way it's great stuff and I plan on finishing it tonight.  First 3 episodes a definite [Image: emoji106.png]

I used to think someone had to be insane to deny objective reality, but any more, Iâ€ve seen so many deluded people, Iâ€ve changed my mind

No longer GroupThink 'woke'.  but it was fun while it lasted.

Just finished watching a little bit ago, and I never really knew exactly what happened before I watched this.  So if you don't know and want to watch and find out, quit reading now.

**********************SPOILER ALERT*******************************

The gist of the story is that a plant manager had his eye on a promotion because his boss had his eye on a promotion (he was going to take his boss's spot).  So he pushed the limits of the plant in order to try to pass a safety test.  He pushed his employees to blow off every safety protocol in everything they were taught.  He threatened their jobs/careers.  Which typically works on people regardless of what political system you're in.

Ok, then when the reactor was pushed to the hilt the crew hit the Homer Simpson fail safe button, but due to reactions beyond their knowledge they essentially turned the core into a ticking time bomb, and when they hit the red/safety button the core exploded.  THIS part was avoidable and was information that none of the workers were aware of because it was information that was redacted.  Why was it redacted?  Because it placed blame directly at the feet of the soviet system.  Cliff notes version  --  They made cooling rods on the cheap when they knew they would be a danger.  So much for a socialist paradise putting people above the almighty dollar, errrr  Ruble

So what you had was personal ambition colliding with a system built on lies.  The result was catastrophic.  That said, a LOT of people did a LOT of heroic sh1t to save many, many lives.  LOTS of unsung heroes in Chernobyl

Forgot to mention that you have to do a search for this.  It's an on-demand sort of thing.  5 episodes.  Really good.   Cool

I saw the first episode when it came out, but then 2020 got a little nutty.

I recently read the book that Chernobyl was based on, Midnight at Chernobyl (I think that was the title) and all I can say after reading it is “Springfield Nuclear Power Plant”. The safety system it the plant actually increased the reaction when it was activated, in the book it was said the system was nuclear equivalent of switching the gas and the break pedals on a car.

Yup, it was the graphite tips of the cooling rods.  They are ok when things are running normal, but when the envelope is pushed they are like pouring gasoline on a fire.  THAT was the part that NO ONE at the plant was aware of.  That's because it was information that the state had kept under wraps.

Chernobyl ended up being the perfect storm of individual greed colliding with the secrecy of a socialist state turning into an absolute cataclysmic disaster.

I thought Chernobyl was a really good series. HBO has some truly excellent, all-time great shows. The Wire, the Sopranos, True Detective Season 1, GoT up until season 5 or 6. All these are worth watching. The Wire dips its toes into big city politics and the corruption surrounding it. Since this is primarily a political board, some may find it interesting. Its been called the most accurate drama about the inner city ever created. Itâ€s not for the feint of heart.
