Bidding at Louisville Slugger Museum's Johnny Bench auction ends at just under $2M
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Personal memorabilia from the career of Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench was auctioned for just under $2 million.
The sale that involved live and online bidding ended Saturday at the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory in Kentucky, not far from where Bench was a 14-time All-Star for the Cincinnati Reds during his 17-year major league career.
David Hunt, president of Hunt Auctions, said bidding easily exceeded pre-sale estimates.
Bench†s 1976 World Series ring and trophy sold for $146,875 each. His 1975 World Series ring went for $135,125. The trophy from the Big Red Machine's title that year sold for $88,125.
Bench†s plaque for being the 1970 National League MVP was bought for $135,125. His Reds home jersey from 1983 sold for $105,750.
Bench, who turns 73 in December, told The Associated Press last month that he planned to use the auction proceeds to fund his youngest children†s college educations. He lives in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, with 30-year-old son Bobby and sons Justin, 14, and Josh, 11, from Bench†s fourth marriage.

“The memories are still there. I still am the MVP,†Bench told the AP. “I†m blessed with what I†ve got and I†m enjoying my life.â€
The auction was handled by the same Pennsylvania company that recently sold Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully†s memorabilia, which earned over $2 million.

Damn sad.  My neighbor played 18 years and he's not wealthy at all.  Bench and he would make TONS today.

Al Oliver got his best pay day from the Dodgers in 1985 at the end of his career. He was the 4th highest paid player on the team for a 750k salary.

The Big Red Machine was awesome back in the days. One of the greatest teams of all time.
He might be a little better off financially if he wasn't married 4x.

The ball players of old didn't make squat back then and today's owe a huge debt of gratitude to them.

He is supposed to have a net worth of $5 million. Also guys that played a long time like Bench and Oliver have nice pensions probably about 100k a year.

I'd be surprised at that.  I really doubt 100 K. I do know those pensions are standard based on years played and NOT on average salary. Oliver is pissed about that. I would bet he is closer to 60K that 100.  I've seen him take jobs in the school locally as truant officer and also president of the board for children services.  I could not tell you what he has in the bank as he's frugal.  He's lost some money and probably helped his family at times. Al is not big on having money although he wants 5 K for autograph signing shows.  At any rate he is content aside he would love to be in HOF. If Harold Baines is there...Oliver should be there.

I pulled up something while ago that stated Oliver's pension would be 90k a year if he waited until age 62 to start drawing it. Considering his salary he should have easily been able to do that if he handled his money reasonably.

He started drawing that in his 40s.  He's 74 so I know for sure he's been on that pension lot longer than 10 years.

Sounds like he didn't manage his money well.

Sounds like he didn't manage his money well. He had brother and sister die and I'm sure he helped them at some point. Went through a divorce and where he had big house down near Arlington he had to sell to break even. Got 2 kids from that marriage; Son went on to play at A&M and is very successful.  Daughter does fine with her career in hair salon, etc but not in same league as brother. Has two grandsons who are very smart and educated but I'm sure he helped them.  Guy is just content to watch westerns and Perry Mason and stay in apt. He's going to move down to Texas with his son next year. We are leaving the butt hole of Ohio about the same time. He's not broke at all, but I'd say pretty frugal.

A friend of mine has a saying he got from his father for the secret to financial stability. Not necessarily wealth as they aren't necessarily the same thing.
 One wife. One house.
