K9BuckBack in the mid-70's I remember my 9 year-old buddy buying cigarettes
#1
We lived out in the country and my friend's mother was a smoker.  She'd send him to the local carryout, which was owned by elderly Korean immigrants, to buy her cigarettes.   It was totally normal.  Looking back on it, I think it's hilarious.

Times have changed.

My mother would send me in to a store the mid 60's through early 70's to get her cigarettes when I would have been between 8 and 15 years old. Salem menthols. I hated having to do that. This happened at several stores. No one ever told me no. At the age of 15 I refused. Probably the only time I ever didn't do something she asked. I told her I didn't want the other kids to think I smoked.

I started chewing tobacco at age 12 but officially purchased it on my own at age 13.  Never once was questioned.

Oh, you mean dip? Sorry, we always used to belt out that line. After football games, everyone would go there to the park to smoke a cigar, have a dip, etc. Looking back it was kind of stupid. It even looks douchey typing it out. Good memories though.

We had a neighbor kid that chewed tobacco from the time he was 9 or 10. Not dip but chewing tobacco. His parents allowed it.

I remember being in a bar with my Dad. He ordered a beer and the bartender asken me if I wanted one. I said sure. I was about 12 or so. When we were kids and at Catholic weddings all the kids drank beer at a very early age. I think it was considered a holy obligation in Mercer county lol.

When I had just turned 16 my buddies convinced me I was the most mature looking of the group and thus should be the one to go into the liquor store to buy beer. I had never been in a liquor store before. I milled around nervously and the clerk then asked if I needed any help. Trying to avoid my voice from cracking I said, no, I know what Iâ€m doing. I then pick up a couple of 6 packs closest to me, go to the counter and then proceed to spill my pocket full of change all over the floor. Now Iâ€m totally flummoxed, I forgot about the bills in the left pocket and pay for the beer with my loose change.

I didnâ€t drink any of the beer. In fact I was 19 before I had my first one. Back in the days if 3.2 beer.

So many funny stories. So I'm 43 and I was doing this in the early 90s.

I would ride my bike up to BP by the house and buy a case of beer and most of the time I never got carded, but once I did and I told the clerk that I got a DUI and lost my license and thats why I'm riding that piece of ***** (bike) he said, oh man that sucks and I get it, and proceeded to sell it to me.

Once when I was 20 I bought a case of beer and the guy sold it to me, but I forgot to buy smokes, so I went back in to buy them and the guy carded me.

I said hey man I don't have my ID with me, but you did just sell me a product that you have to be 21 to purchase and that cigarettes are only 18, so you should sell them to me. He said that his bosses told him to card everyone who's buying cigarettes no matter the age, but not alcohol.

Actually both.  I still dip to this day.  I would buy Copenhagen snuff and I would buy Redman or Levi Garret for outside when fishing but mostly playing baseball.

Funny story how I started was I am the youngest of 6 with my next closest sibling being 5 years older than me.  Well they all got mail and I thought that was important.  SO I would get coupons for free cans of tobacco in get this,  Parade Magazine (remember them).  Anyhow I would get 3 cans in the mail and that is how I started.

Can remember back in high school you could smoke in the courtyard beside the gym and in between classes and at lunch.

I lived over seas age 6-9 and in most places kids could have some wine of beer with meals so I did. Got a little tipsy a couple of times. So I was always allowed to have a beer or glass of wine with dinner growing up.
My parents would never send me for cigarettes. They hid them from me because I hated them with a passion. Still do. I'd throw them out the window of the car if they didn't watch them. No worries about me smoking I've never even had a puff and never will. Our H.S had a smoking area too but you had to be 18. Although all the smokers smoked in the bathrooms.
I remember going to the Hilton in Las Vegas with my dad when I was 17. I said let's play Craps. He says you have to be 21. I laughed. While we were playing craps a waitress came by and gave me a free beer. I almost got religion, I swear I heard heavenly horns. My dad was pizzed and said he got carded until he was 35. I said that's your problem baby face. I was never carded. Not once and started buying beer at 15.

Friggin hilarious Jmesser. I was born in Coldwater and yes the Mercer County Catholic weddings were a drunk fest for teenagers. I was 15 ordering "highballs" all night.
