Ouch, ouch, ouch.    In a mens 35 and over softball league I was our catcher. You get a wide range of capabilities on teams like that. Including a few that never really had played before. Had one guy who would fling the bat backwards after he connected. I warned him twice about it. But to no avail. In the last inning he caught me square between the eyes once with a bat. No blood but it made a big perfect circular bruise on my lower forehead.
Itâ€s the same league when my leg got broke. Bottom of the last inning a guy was trying to score from second as the ball was thrown from the outfield. Iâ€m positioned perfectly so as to catch the ball and swing my glove around to tag the runner without blocking the plate. Here comes the ball and here comes big guy, except he did not go for the plate, the azzhole took me out. Broke the left leg bone right above the ankle. They win and no apology. He acted like he just won the World Series. Guy was a complete jerk. I still hate that guy.

The play at the plate has always fascinated me.  How a catcher could block the plate and/or a base runner could just absolutely plow the catcher without even trying to find the plate?  If I had known that this was part football in advance I wouldn't have a problem with it, but reading stuff like what China just wrote pizzez me off.  What a POS.  No apology?  Nothing?  Never came over to see if you were alright?

I don't get it. It's a men's 35 and older league. Average age was probably early to mid-40's. I was 39 at the time. We are just a bunch of office junkies, not athletes. Catchers have no mask, no chest protector and no shin guards. And the league rule was that a baserunner could not take out a defensive player. And having caught many games before, I knew where to place myself, just in case. After the collision, this guy had to literally pick himself up over me and then roll over to touch the plate. No call on the collision. I found out a few weeks later his buddy was the ump. No apology, nothing, only his crazy we won dance. I was laying there for a while. One of their guys did come over to check on me, but just one.
It made life uncomfortable for the next 8 weeks or so because I couldn't drive my standard shift Ford Ranger pickup. Well, actually more uncomfortable for my ex-wife because she had to take our son to day care and then me to work. And then all of that in reverse at the end of the day.
Oh well, I'll get over some day.

But enough of this story, let's get back to some funny ones.

That would really piss me off.

I was at a bachelors party and I was probably 22 at the time.  It was a nice Summer night and the fellas and I had been partying for hours at a house in the country with a large lawn.  Someone thought it would be a good idea to get the Kawasaki dirt bikes out and we all heartily agreed.  I was an experienced dirt bike rider so I got on one of them but I kept stalling it so I was advised by one of the least sober attendees to keep the revs up more when releasing the clutch.  Sounded like sound advice so that's what I did.  The only light in the backyard was house lights that didn't extend too far into the yard.  Anyway, I popped the clutch (should have released slowly) and wheelied out of sight and then I guess there was silence.  The front of the bike came down with back brakes and flipped me over the handlebars when I applied too much front break (experience doesn't work when one is well into their cups).  Next thing I remember was them helping me off the ground hoping I wasn't dead.  I had a piece of some plant material (stick of some kind) inserted in my left palm which I removed after much cussing.  Trip to the ER (driven by a friend) and 13 (six inside and seven out) stitches and I was back at the party.  Couldn't use that hand for about a month. The thumb just didn't want to move without pain. That didn't teach me the downside of drinking but I haven't ridden a dirt bike since.  Should have stopped drinking and kept riding bikes but that's another story.

Edit for additional stupid mistake story:

I just thought of another "incident" that could have been bad. I was about 13 and a friend and I were out hunting with CO2 pistols. We were deep in a woods and I had just installed a new cartridge but the gun wouldn't shoot. I heard the cartridge release the gas so I couldn't figure out what was wrong. Anyway, I thought the gas must have leaked out of the gun so I unscrewed the gas chamber cap. The cap wouldn't have come off at all with gas in the gun (or so I thought). The cartridge would normally slide right out but this one didn't. It appeared to be jammed so I tried like heck to get it out. I was looking at that cartridge trying to get purchase on it with my fingers to try to twist it and all I remember was seeing a cloud. My friend finally get me off the ground and explained what had happened. When I was trying to twist the cartridge it did come loose but it wasn't expended. It blew out of that damn pistol and nailed me right above me right eye. I mean about a half inch above the eye into the bony area above the eye. We got back home and my dad took me to the doctors office. The doctor said that It really didn't need any additional work beyond cleaning it. It would leave a scar but not at all noticeable (and he was correct on that). He also said another inch lower and my eye would have been gone and it may have penetrated my brain (worst case scenario). I had no other symptoms so he sent me home. I learned to respect ALL firearms at all times that day.

Playing with firearms, fire, etc., can be very dangerous, disabling and lethal. I've had many discussions with my son over the years about all the dumb ways he could end up paralyzed or dead. It only takes a moment of stupidity to radically diminish one's life forever.

We did the paintball gun and air-soft "wars". Of course, those hurt too and left welts. It was fun.

Can you get away with that today?

Paintball guns are probably the most scary, but legal, fun you can have today. The businesses that structure paintball into teams are the best.  We had a large group that would go to an outdoor place in AZ wearing a mask, but only shorts and a t-shirt besides that.   Even though your life was never in danger, the anxiety of exposed skin and minimal protection was awesome.

F that. Those can hurt even with heavy clothing on. Of course, you wear a mask. I'm no running around in a T and shorts though.  Big Grin

I think we all had blood running down our arms, legs or both when we got done.

Because, if nothing else, Iâ€m consistent. Anyway, during the day I park my car along a street where there is a pine tree above my car. With us heading into Winter, I have been clearing the large dry dropped pine needles off my hood almost daily. So today I reached across to get the needles that were wedged in the wiper blades. Aaaaaannnnnd ... I drove 3 of those suckers right up under the fingernail of my right index finger almost all the way up. I will say that it was, and remains, quite the unpleasant experience. 1/5. Would not recommend.
