Jon Heyman of MLB Network set off a bit of a tweet storm earlier this afternoon with some updates on where things are at with what Major League Baseball is talking about with their current plans of getting the game resumed.
Quote:<script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> Let's dive into the first tweet here. Early July remains a best case scenario for a start time. That's still seven weeks away, and a lot of things can change between now and then. But Heyman lays out that testing capabilities are a big thing that needs to be there for baseball to return. What is also interesting here is that it seems the regular divisions, instead of the larger 10-team geographic divisions, are the thought they'd like to have. Quote:Spring switch? Majority of teams favor spring training at regular home parks in franchise cities where possible (NY, Boston among potential exceptions depending on MDs, authorities). If so: intrasquad games. With only 1 field at home park, workouts likely staggered through day. A spring training in Cincinnati? That sounds like it could be what happens. This isn't the first we've heard of this kind of plan, though it did seem to fade away a bit over the last month or so as other plans have been floated out there that didn't involve games being played in home cities. It's also worth noting the whole "where possible" part of the report. Some cities and states aren't at the point right now where it seems like there could be large scale team workouts, or even games. Making an exception for sports teams probably wouldn't go over so well with the public, either. But as we noted above - things can certainly change between today and when teams could try to enact this plan. Quote:More possible MLB changes for 2020: limited travel, no x-county flights, more divisional play, expanded rosters, taxi squads, expanded playoffs, more experiments (runner on 2B in extra innings?), more doubleheaders, fewer off days, high-fiving/spitting discouraged or forbidden. This was the final of the three tweets sent out by Heyman. The schedule is certainly going to be interesting if there's going to be no cross country flights. Does that eliminate teams in the west divisions from playing anyone else? Or does Los Angeles or Seattle to Cincinnati or Pittsburgh not count as cross country? Will the central and east divisions play each other in non-divisional games? The expanded rosters part isn't new. We heard about that from the very beginning. The "taxi squad" thing has been speculated upon a lot as it just makes sense. Guys are going to get hurt throughout the season, and while no one is officially saying it, the feeling is pretty much that there's not going to be any minor league baseball this season - so you need to have players to step in and take over on the big league roster when that happens. How many players make up that roster, and how many extra players are on the "active" roster isn't yet known and is likely going to be something that the two sides (MLB and the MLBPA) are going to have to go back and forth on a little bit. As things sit right now, Major League Baseball still hasn't given a plan to the Players Association to actually look and and discuss, perhaps counter, and vote on. But that's reportedly coming within the next week. Right now we're still just getting rumors about what may be in there. Things are going to be different in 2020 if and when we get baseball. How different? We're all going to have to just wait and see.

Hey Zig...since you're just about the biggest baseball fan I've run across, was wondering if you've ever checked out Dombrov Sports and his baseball simulation site. It's based on Sports Illustrated's old baseball "board" games of the early 70's. I had Pennant Race and was absolutely obsessed with it (also had their golf game and NFL football; it's amazing that we could entertain ourselves before PCs, Xboxes and iPhones). Played an entire season twice (about 4000 games). Dombrov has taken it to a whole new level, and it's pretty interesting.

Players reject the offer by owners since they want a 50/50 revenue sharing plan and players say too low.
The Athletic are reporting that the MLB owner's plan to go to a revenue share that would give a 50-50 split of league revenues for 2020 is a non-starter for the Players Association, which sees the system as a salary cap. Players would want more or at least stick with the plan for pay already agreed on. https://redlegnation.com/2020/03/27/mlb-...20-season/

Got 15 days till first pitch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sonny Gray to start Reds opening day, rotation set David Bell wasn't planning on announcing the rotation until Thursday, but during his press conference on Wednesday he was asked about it and decided that it was as good a time as any and spilled the beans. Sonny Gray will start on opening day against the Detroit Tigers on July 24th at 6:10pm ET. "To be an opening day starter, especially in this circumstance, I try to put myself in that moment. Itâ€s going to be an important day, itâ€s going to be a fun game to play," said Sonny Gray. "Baseball will be back and it will be back in some of the weirdest and craziest circumstances that itâ€s ever been a part of. I think 2020 is going to be a season thatâ€s remembered forever. When you look back on this in 20 or 30 years everyoneâ€s going to remember 2020, itâ€s going to be one of those places youâ€re just going to remember. I think to start opening day in a season like this, itâ€s going to be something that will be remembered for a long time. Iâ€m very excited about it – itâ€s a challenge, I havenâ€t thought about the moment itself, itâ€s a challenge but itâ€s an exciting challenge. I know Iâ€m ready for this challenge." A 2019 National League All-Star, Gray posted a 2.87 ERA in 31 starts and 175.1 innings pitched for the Cincinnati Reds last season. He allowed just 122 hits and he walked 68 batters with 205 strikeouts - a career high. Following his final start of the season, Gray had surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow - but by the time spring training rolled around in February he was good to go. "It was something I was hoping would happen," said Gray. "I was preparing myself to pitch in that game because if the opportunity came, I wanted to be ready. I want to be ready mentally, I want to be ready physically – I just want to be ready. It was a challenge that I was hoping to have and something Iâ€m excited to take part in. " Manager David Bell had options to go to as the opening day starter. He said he could have gone with anyone and it would have been a good option. The rotation will be as follows:
In a normal year, which 2020 most certainly isn't, the opening day start tends to be handed to the best pitcher on the staff. For the Reds who that is may be up for debate. Both Luis Castillo and Sonny Gray were All-Stars last season and both had a big-half season, with Castllo dominating in the first half, while Gray was lights out in the second half. "Luis Castillo was our opening day starter last year and you saw the kind of season he had. So you can imagine that conversation was all about hey this has nothing to do with your performance or our faith or confidence in your ability," said Bell. "It was more about the other two factors. When I told Sonny Gray he was the opening day starter it was basically the same conversation, but thereâ€s no denying the fact that Sonnyâ€s stepped up and heâ€s a leader, he sets a great example, he also had a great season last year. Given that it worked out that way, we couldnâ€t have asked for a better option to set the tone for the season for our rotation." Things are going to be different, particularly early on in the season as pitchers aren't going to be asked to go as deep into games as usual given the shorter "ramp up" time. Tyler Mahle, who was in the rotation last season for Cincinnati, is currently on the outside looking in. But there are plans for him to be utilized if he winds up not making the rotation. "Tyler Mahle, we have him kind of going on a day 4 schedule just to build his innings up," Bell said. "Heâ€s kind of set up to piggy back or come in longer relief if needed towards the back end of the rotation if any of those guys need picked up the first or second time through the rotation." David Bell mentioned that they wanted to set things up to optimize that first 17-game stretch of the season before there's an off day on August 10th. Assuming the rotation stays true to what was announced today, here's how that would play out: Date Opponent Starter Friday, July 24 Detroit Tigers Gray Saturday, July 25 Detroit Tigers Castillo Sunday, July 26 Detroit Tigers Bauer Monday, July 27 Chicago Cubs Miley Tuesday, July 28 Chicago Cubs DeSclafani Wednesday, July 29 Chicago Cubs Gray Thursday, July 30 Chicago Cubs Castillo Friday, July 31 at Detroit Tigers Bauer Saturday, August 1 at Detroit Tigers Miley Sunday, August 2 at Detroit Tigers DeSclafani Monday, August 3 Cleveland Indians Gray Tuesday, August 4 Cleveland Indians Castillo Wednesday, August 5 at Cleveland Indians Bauer Thursday, August 6 at Cleveland Indians Miley Friday, August 7 at Milwaukee Brewers DeSclafani Saturday, August 8 at Milwaukee Brewers Gray Sunday, August 9 at Milwaukee Brewers Castillo Â
