BOOOOOOOO!  [Image: emoji107.png]

When I heard the Reds were opening with Detroit I was thinking about making the drive down with some Tiger fan friends.  I asked the one guy and he said I don't think they are allowing fans.  I recall hearing that a while ago, but I blew it off as crackpot nonsense.  Of course they would allow fans, right?

Threw the baby, the tub, the bathroom and the entire house out with the bathwater.

Reds Ballpark story. I was the Project Architect for the Cincy design firm for the ballpark. The County lost huge money on the Bengals stadium so they hired a lawyer and a project rep to be in every ballpark design meeting and construction manager meeting. The lawyer was a persnickety type, but OK. The County Rep was an Ahole of the first magnitude. And he was doing his best to make us look bad so he could look good to his boss, the County Commission Chairman. I donâ€t know why, and it is most certainly not my way, but he seemed convinced we were cheating on everything. I had to put up with this nonsense for six years every single stinking day.

So, we are five years into the project, he is still trying to pin something on us. For five years, he had nothing. One day he walks into the meeting exceptionally happy, giddy almost. Then with a big smile, told us we would have to pay $170,000 to replace all of the custom tree grates with the Reds logo because they didnâ€t meet the ADA code. If we didnâ€t pay immediately he was going to enact the very expensive clause for delaying the job.

My boss was very unhappy with me. The problem actually wasnâ€t the ADA, but the City had enacted a higher restriction than ADA in the one month period between finishing the drawings and then issuing them. We didnâ€t catch that. Technically though, we were still at fault. So I told my boss I have a plan. He just shook his head and said, thatâ€ll never work.

At the next meeting the County Rep asked, whereâ€s the check? I said, give me the old tree grates and weâ€ll give you the check for the new ones. He says, you canâ€t have those! They donâ€t belong to you. I say, if Iâ€m paying, their mine! But, they have the Reds logo on them. So, I say, they arenâ€t a Reds licensed product. So they are mine. What are you going to use them for? I say, I donâ€t know, maybe keep them in my back yard, maybe sell them. You canâ€t sell them!!! I can if theyâ€re mine. He turns to the lawyer, tell him he canâ€t do that and I want the money now! Lawyer says, well, heâ€s technically right. Then a lot of expletives from the County Rep. I tell him next week we get him a check and we get the tree grates. Oh he was pizzed.

At next weekâ€s meeting, I await for the subject to come up on the agenda. Itâ€s not there. The charge has also been scrubbed from the change order list. I decide to say nothing, he says nothing. Magically the issue never came up again.

I have no real reason to share this story other than Iâ€ve never shared it before and thought, why not?

TOP PROSPECTS IMPRESSING COACHES
As with Spring Training, fans are not only interested in how the Reds†stars are performing during Summer Camp, but theyâ€re also keeping an eye on how some of the teamâ€s top prospects are faring. Manager David Bell and his coaching staff are doing that as well, which means tracking both the action at Great American Ball Park and the teamâ€s alternate training site at Prasco Park.

“We are trying to see everybody over at Prasco for different reasons, I would say,” Bell said to MLB.comâ€s Mark Sheldon. “I still believe each guy over there has an opportunity to either make the team or contribute a lot to our team during the season, so itâ€s important to see all of them.”

Two of the young stars impressing the most are shortstop Jose Garcia and catcher Tyler Stephenson. Garcia, ranked as the teamâ€s No. 5 prospect by MLB.com, had already opened eyes during Spring Training with his slick fielding and surprising power. Stephenson is ranked a couple notches higher at No. 3 on the organizationâ€s prospect charts and the former No. 1 draft pick has continued to show improvement and look more and more polished with each passing day.

Reds add Derek Dietrich to the 60-man player pool

The Cincinnati Reds announced this afternoon that infielder/outfielder Derek Dietrich has been added to their 60-man player pool. Dietrich, who was with the team in spring training back in February and March, was notably among the four players not brought back as a part of the player pool roster in July. Catcher Chris Okey was also not brought back, while pitcher Vladimir Gutierrez was suspended for a positive drug test and is not eligible, and infielder Blake Trahan opted to retire from baseball (he was invited back by the Reds).

Small sample size alarm here, but Dietrich wasn't having much success in his limited time back in February and March. The 30-year-old Pittsburgh Pirate annihilator was hitting .174/.259/.478 with 12 strikeouts in 27 plate appearances during spring training out in Arizona. Now, we generally know that spring stats don't mean much and for a variety of different reasons - but things hadn't been going well before the baseball world was put on hiatus.
The addition of Derek Dietrich to the 60-man player pool puts Cincinnati's roster at a total of 58 players. That also puts the group over at Prasco Park at 23 players, while 35 remain on the Great American Ballpark side - though at this point those numbers don't mean too much as intrasquad scrimmages are happening nearly every day and players from Prasco are coming to Great American Ballpark to participate. Those "rosters" matter a bit more once the season begins and players will be more closely aligned with their specific ballpark roster.
Matt Bowman is back
Bobby Nightengale of the Cincinnati Enquirer noted this afternoon that relief pitcher Matt Bowman is back on the mound after dealing with some elbow soreness. The right-handed pitcher threw a bullpen session yesterday that saw him toss 35 pitches.  Bowman is likely competing for one of the final spots in the bullpen on the roster.

Season's FIRST PITCH only 9 days away, week from this coming Friday.   Can't wait.  So far so good with the way MLB is handling the covid spread.

CINCINNATI -- In the 3 1/2 months between the abrupt end of Spring Training and the resumption of workouts, Reds catchers continued to work over Zoom with coach J.R. House. The club made sure that top catching prospect Tyler Stephenson was included in those sessions.
The reason was simple. Ranked as the organization's No. 3 prospect by MLB Pipeline, Stephenson has the chance to be in the Major Leagues at any point during this 60-game season.
• Higher call? '20 may be dream year for Reds' C
“The catchers and J.R. did a good job of having weekly meetings the last three to four months when we were out,” Reds manager David Bell said Thursday. “Weâ€re trying to include [Stephenson] in as much as we can -- for more than anything the educational part of that position. I havenâ€t been around football a lot, but maybe itâ€s kind of likening it to a quarterback. Thereâ€s so much more than the physical part of developing. Itâ€s really understanding kind of the playbook of what weâ€re asking guys to do.”

Stephenson, who was added to the 40-man roster in November, would likely have spent this season at Triple-A Louisville under normal circumstances. Instead, the 23-year-old is part of Cincinnatiâ€s 58-man player pool and has been working out mostly at the alternate training site at Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio.
But on select occasions, including Thursday, Stephenson has been at Great American Ball Park for workouts and scrimmages.

“Every day, every experience he has is just one more step towards hopefully becoming an everyday catcher here for us -- at some point,” Bell said.

But for that to come to fruition in 2020, something would have to shift with the backlog of primary catchers in Tucker Barnhart and Curt Casali ahead of Stephenson on the depth chart.

“It's going to be a very unique season, to say the least, as everyone kind of expects,” Stephenson said. “But obviously, I'll just continue to work hard and wait for that call, hopefully.”
The 11th overall pick out of high school in the 2015 Draft, Stephenson batted .285/.372/.410 with six homers and 44 RBIs in 89 games last season for Double-A Chattanooga. In 13 more games in the Arizona Fall League, he batted .347/.418/.490 with seven doubles.

On Monday against Amir Garrett, Stephenson hit a two-run homer to right-center field. More valuable than that, however, has been getting to work with the other catchers, big league pitching staff and coaches.
“Just to learn from them … especially pitcher-wise, getting to know them as much as possible,” Stephenson said. “It's pretty similar to what it is during Spring Training -- pitch selection, what they like, obviously getting to know them on a pitching level, getting to know their mindset going into games.”

Bell has enjoyed getting to know Stephenson better this year and has a good feeling about his ability to man one of the most important positions on the field at a young age. The club gives its catchers a lot of responsibility in game planning and handling the pitching staff.

“Tyler, heâ€s in a great position being a catcher and being a top prospect in our organization. Weâ€re seeing why -- he can really hit,” Bell said. “Heâ€s improving defensively, and heâ€s getting closer and closer to being able to contribute at this level. But itâ€s a very demanding position. He hasnâ€t played above Double-A, but heâ€s coming on fast and we believe in him.
“Weâ€re going to develop him and thereâ€s definitely no limitations on when he can arrive. It can happen at any time, especially given what weâ€re dealing with this year. Weâ€re supporting him every way we can, but heâ€s doing everything he can also to get here quick.”

I have to admit, even though I have been a Reds fan for life, and even though they have tired to put together a decent roster this year, I have been so deflated by what's happening in sports, I'm not sure if I want to watch any sports at all. Especially pro sports. I might watch the Bucks play football, but now, even that is in question.
