I was watching some of their live concert stuff earlier. I've decided I like them better live than on the studio recordings. Taylor Hawkins is great too. Weird to see a drummer singing like he did.

I'll start rattling off some 90s grunge and alt rock/pop bands off the top of my head:
Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, Rage Against the Machine, U2 (spanned many decades, but they had some biggies in the 90s) Foo Fighters, Wallflowers, Gin Blossoms, 3rd Eye Blind, 10,000 Maniacs/Natalie Merchant, Wilco, Son Volt, Jayhawks, Jewel, Phish, Massive Attack, Portishead, REM (just like U2), Lyle Lovett, Dave Matthews Band, Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morrisette, Hootie and the Blowfish, etc...  not to mention all the one hit wonders like Better than Ezra, Sneaker Pimps, Fiona Apple, etc...
That's just the alt rock/pop/cowpunk scene. That doesn't even mention the country explosion with Garth Brooks, et al. The Rap explosion. The "R & B" (not real R & B) stuff as well. Not to mention the "trip hop" movement.
Again, I am not comparing any version of rock, 90s or otherwise, to late 60s through the 70s classic rock. That's a losing battle.

Let me add that I only judge decades in the traditional sense: 1970--1979, 1990--1999, etc...  So to me that also factors into my subjective *opinion* of the 90s being the best *overall* pound for pound decade of popular music genres. On that note, disco alone counts against the 70s  i.e. the decade would've been even higher if it wasn't for that black stain on the history of music.

Weird how people can look at the same thing and have 2 entirely different opinions. Greatest decade by far IMO.  And it's not even close.Â
Again, I'm talking all popular genres. Late '60s and '70s had classic rock, and nothing beats that on an individual basis, but judging a decade as a whole across all genres? 90s in a laugher. Okay : Name me 25 Bands from the 90's and 100 Songs from the 90's that will be remembered and talked about in the year 2055 and i maintain Top 25 Bands and Top 200 Songs from 1967-1977 are remembered now and in 2055 way out number anything from the 90's . The variety of Genre's producing and making Music then will never be matched. RnR, jazz, Blues, Motown , Pop, Soul , Disco , Country and it isn't even close Brother.
You Go 1st i'll wait and laugh then respond in a few days. I took the 90's off to start a Family and don't fell like i missed a beat. remember Grunge started in the late 80's . Music is subjective, and as seen here most probably think their decade of influence was the best. What is key here is your use of the word remembered. People who remember that music will be dying at a faster rate leaving fewer that remember that music.Â
I am with Scarlet on your cooking the books. I get a discrepancy on a decade being 1970-1979 or 1971-1980, but grabbing 3 years from the previous decade must have a reason.Â
Trying to put a number on things is hard as music is marketed differently. In the list of 100 most streamed songs, 70†s has one, Bohemian Rhapsody, and 90†s has one, Wonderwall. To be fair, doubt anyone is going to see a movie about Oasis like they did Freddy, so one for 70†s. I do know this, I am far more likely to change the station if a 70s song comes on than a 90s. Score one for 90s.Â
Most streamed songs on Spotify from decades:
Hmmmmm?
90s seem to have the edge here.

The 90's was the last hurrah for country music and contained many great country songs and groups. Also it was a good decade for smooth jazz. Other than that, there isn't much except for a few good songs and many of those are by people left over from the classic rock and Motown eras.

I almost always agree with your posts. What's off here? If you don't like 90's music, start a 70's music thread. I'll participate in that too. Or 60's or 80's. Music since about 2003 is mostly dead to me. Yeah, I like some new music, but I'm not waiting for the VMA's. I don't event ot know most of the songs or "artists."

I grew up in the 70s and 80s. Graduated high school in '86. So you'd think I'd be more fonder of the music from that era. No, the 90s were just that good. I have to give the decade its due. Â
If I were forced to rank the best of the best it would be:
1. Classic rock
2. Any popular genre from the 90s. Pick one. Whichever one you picked, the remaining styles would make up 3, 4, 5, etc... Â
Of course, yes, Motown was also great and would fall in that ranking group as well. Â

Any group that can successfully incorporate Faygo into their act has my utmost respect. Â
