The Wuhan lab was being set up to study zoonotic viruses, the type of virus that jumps from animals to humans, things that make you go hmmmm...
Yup. At first I didn't recall why the Wuhan name rang a bell. Of course, while running on the treadmill it all came back. I recall reading the article I posted. It's one thing to recall Beijing or Shanghai for something, but who here - outside of you and I - ever heard of Wuhan?
p!tch here's your candidates chance to shake the Aleppo tag for the Wuhan tag.

What I know is that the lab is not that far from the market. Now, to put in a positive thought, it might be the best situation since the highest level lab is nearby and can focus its efforts on the virus, how it mutates and thus, how to best contain it.
The immediate need is that China is now short on masks, even for healthcare givers. They will have a factory going immediately to make more masks. They are now preparing a site for a new Wuhan Infectious Hospital, they will have this operational in a few weeks. This is China, they will get it done.
The concern with all the people traveling now for the holiday (which technically starts today) will lead to wide spread infection. There is already concern expressed for Sichuan province.

p!tch here's your candidates chance to shake the Aleppo tag for the Wuhan tag. I†ve been to Wuhan a number of times. But I†m in the 0.0001 of Americans that are familiar with this city. I like the place, outside of bat, snake and porcupine, the food is great.

Around 100,000 people die in the US every year from the flu and nobody says a word.
It's estimated that 250,000 people die each year from medical mistakes.... crickets.

The CDC website states what has become commonly accepted and widely reported in the lay and scientific press: annually "about 36 000 [Americans] die from flu" ( www.cdc.gov/flu/about/disease.htm) and "influenza/pneumonia" is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States ( www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/lcod.htm).
That's 1 in every 8600 people. Of course, it typically is populations more susceptible....elderly, children, people with immune system issues....

The New England Journal of Medicine just published: The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describes the detection of new coronaviruses in three patients with pneumonia and their clinical features. Genome-wide sequencing has been completed, showing similarities to bat viruses. The virus is more likely to survive in respiratory epithelial cells than sars, and blood and direct contact may be more important than airborne transmission. This could explain why neurosurgical patients in a hospital in Wuhan were infected after surgery. It could also explain the key role played by wild game in the seafood market in South China in the process of transmission. Article link: nej.md/2RNolKs

Not to make light of the situation; especially those quarantined in China, but when I read about bat sandwiches, bats in general, I'm reminded of Batman doing the batusi.

Eating bat is a good way to catch rabies, let alone something else.

My wifeâ€s big fam was here yesterday for the New Yearâ€s holiday, but today they all agreed no more family visits during the remainder of the week long holiday. Everyone wants to secure in their own homes. Seems this is reasonable and we have plenty of beer, so Iâ€m good.
One weird thing though, dog got sick today. Hmmmm?

The travel bans continue to expand. They are now stopping all bus traffic in and out of Beijing. Trains and Planes still running. The Forbidden City is closed as of today. Extremely few cars on the road.
