Absolutely. Â
So have you crossed the Rubicon, errr.... the Pearl into full blown/Jack Nicholson in the Shining level of cabin fever yet?  I†m starting to get there. Haven†t been out for three days. I†m not one that likes to be locked in. I want to work at the office (I†d likely be there by myself since the office complex is seriously limiting people there until next week) but my wife freaks out when I mention that.

A major TV commentator was giving guidance on how to navigate through life with the coronavirus hanging over our heads. So instead of shaking hands, he is recommending doing the fist bump.Â
it was hilarious, guy looks to be about 60, and he demonstrates the fist bump with some other clown on the show. I now can†t wait to do this, except I†ll also pull my hand back slowly and wave my fingers. Got to go the whole way if you are going to do this.

Man on the Street Report
Today was the new day for reporting back to work according to the government. As I understand things are pretty empty.
Our office campus issued a set of rules to follow. First, they donâ€t fully open until 17 February. You can go to the office this week but pretty much only one or two are allowed to go for a short time.
We now have to keep a daily record of our temperature, even if you are not at work. For the record, mine is 36.6 C, or 97.9F who insist on living in the dark past.
If people are from Beijing they can go to the office on the 17th, if they are from another province they need to quarantine at home for a week before they can come to the office. Now if they are from Hubei Province or a neighboring province they need to quarantine for two weeks after they arrive. Got to show proof of this.

https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/sally-pi...dicare-all Interestingly enough, China does not have a single payer system. It†s a little closer to our system. As an employer we have to pay into a health insurance program. It doesn†t cover everything so 30-40% is out of pocket. And if you want service, you have to pony up BEFORE the service is provided.

According to a report today, President Xi stated at the most recent Politburo meeting, there have been too many restrictions put in place to protect against the virus. That this threatens the economy. He wants shops and factories to reopen.Â
Which leads to point two, very few factories are open right now, but Beijing has been blanketed in a fairly thick haze. So where†s it coming from?Â
Shops and restaurants are closed, I†d say at least 90% are shut down. Other than food, you can†t buy much.Â
My apartment complex is now installing a vestibule at the entrance gate you will have to walk through to get in. When you go through the vestibule, you will be sprayed with some sort anti-bacterial product. Of course, the coronavirus is not a bacteria, but hey, they are thinking, at least it will look they are “doing something.â€

So.....how does this compare to the SARS virus? I remember that, but did not follow that closely

SARS was slow going and not as contagious, but almost 10% died after contracting it. Whereas this virus took off like a shot, so it†s very contagious, but not nearly as deadly. At about 2%.Â
The number of new cases are starting to drop from the peak about 7 days ago. The big concern is the potential for the virus to spread in Africa or India where the possible consequences could be substantially higher.

[T]he overall death toll from coronavirus in China had topped 1,000. Global numbers: 43,105 confirmed cases; 1,018 deaths.
More than two weeks after China locked down a major city... assembly lines that make GM cars and Apple iPhones are standing silent. Nissan of Japan said it would shut down its plant in Kyushu, Japan, for four days “due to supply shortages of parts from China." FCA in Italy and Hyundai in South Korea warned a lack of parts from China could force them to curtail production.
The government in Shanghai, home to more than 20 million people only 70 percent of the cityâ€s manufacturers were taking steps to resume production. Few have actually received permission to do so.
It is becoming increasingly clear that restarting China would be difficult even if the country made major strides in the next few days toward containing the outbreak. Until then, the damage is spreading.
BG: This outbreak is a perfect example of a "Black Swan" event and yet the markets are holding steady thus far. I'm curious if this outbreak threatens Xi's grip on the Communist Party.

I hope this alerts the global economy to the need for more production diversification out of China.

This is leading tech companies to diversifying their supply chain. And the suppliers are thinking this too. Foxxcon is looking to move some production to Taiwan.
