Computer recommendations needed
#1
I've had my current laptop for 5 years.  I need another.  I have a desktop that I use for work-related matters and so my laptop is mostly for surfing the internet.  What I want is for my computer to be FAST at downloading various pages, especially on graphics-rich sites.  I also like to have multiple tabs (8-10) open at the same time.  What do I need?  Thanks in advance.

What is your speed from your service provider?  What kind of modem and router do you have?  You can have the fastest PC in the world, but your other hardware can still be a bottleneck.

Go to speedtest.net and see what your upload/download speeds are.

So true. We cut the cable (tv, still kept internet) so with a house full of streamers I needed to upgrade the router. Amazed how much faster same machines are on the Nighthawk.

If you don't need Microsoft office(though there is now office online) and you don't do video editing or gaming, a Chromebook can work. Got my daughter one that can file over an be used as a tablet as well for around $300.

I don't think graphic rich web sites need much, gaming and vid editing need high end graphics card and solid state drive. Looking at a grand, but that sounds like overkill. Microsoft Surface

I have a new (3mos) Lenovo Carbon X1 think pad for work. Super light, but I am finding it fickle. My old think pad I could just fold it, it would sleep, and ready to roll in AM. Not this, if I don't shut it down everyday it gets sloggy, slow and freezes at times. I don't think of myself as a heavy user, but I will have a lot of things open at same time.

As far as the actual laptop goes, whether you get Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc, you must get something with a solid state drive (SSD), not a traditional hard drive.  The biggest failure point and bottleneck, for computers, is the old, 5200/6400 rpm spinning hard drive.  My two primary laptops are both refurbished Lenovos with SSD's and they're both over 5 years old.  You're better off buying a refurb with an ssd than a new laptop with traditional hard drive.

In general you should look for:
  • Windows 10 (That's all that's out there)
  • An SSD of at least 240gb
  • Intel i5/i7 processor
  • At least 8gb of memory
  • Network card supports 10/100/1000
  • Wireless supports 802.11a/b/g/n.  AC is a nice to have, but not required.
  • Only if you plan to game: NVIDIA or Radeon graphics.

But,  again, you're better off buying a refurb with ssd than new with regular hard drive.

Make sure your internet provider is giving you 50mb+ and, if your wifi router is more than 3 years old, consider getting a new one. (some internet providers combine router and modem into one device, to rent each month, if you don't want to buy your own)

Agree with most here. "I" processors, SSD drive and a lot of memory. BTW, had a buddy who got a Chromebook, he said it was the worst decision he could have made. Hates it.

Chromebooks are good for a kid or adult who really just wants to surf the web and maybe do some basic word or spreadsheet work.  Google has some good extensions, but you can't do much on chromebooks, yet.

yeah, I looked into one briefly and ended up here as well.  If you want any old school(hard wire ethernet, monitor, etc) or any heavy new school gaming or such....forget it.

It has a niche, but you better be willing to stay directly within it.
