So the average person there is down with the looting and destruction of property, etc...????  I mean you would think there is a built in base of sanity there.  It's been a functioning city with businesses, infrastructure and stuff.  Obviously there's normalcy there too.  Yet most of the folk are cool with this crap?  

You know the area better than any of us, but from an outsider's perspective we just....   we just don't get it.  

I may ramble a bit, so bear with me (I haven't had any coffee yet and slightly hungover)...

10-15 years ago Portland was on the verge of a big boom. Small tech companies were setting up shop and growing quite quickly. Property values were skyrocketing. Once sh*thole neighborhoods were being gentrified by young white hipsters...opening small shops, restaurants, breweries, etc in places NOBODY would be caught walking in after dark just a few years prior. In hindsight, this brought almost as many problems as it did benefits.

For many decades, Portland has been reasonably liberal, but had decent leadership that kept the place pretty even keeled while satisfying their more liberal constituents by massively overspending for bike lanes, ineffective mass transit and the like.

Portland also became an excellent place for young people to migrate to for the nearly unlimited amount of free sh*t and service industry jobs. As these young people got a bit older, they became a bit more aggressive about shifting the city leftward.

When Trump was elected it blew the lid off a pot that had been slowly bubbling for the previous few years. ANTIFA was born out of those early protests, the radicals seeing that the city had no intent on controlling their behavior in any meaningful way.

By not doing anything in those early days of radical protest, the city (and city council) gave their approval for the behavior...which as we've all seen has grown exponentially more radical...to the point we are seeing these terrorists setting police departments on fire while barricading the doors with officers and staff inside.

Portlanders have chosen to elect much more radical "leaders" for the city council, even after seeing the damage ANTIFA was beginning to do to the city, the businesses, the property values, etc.

You have to understand these types of highly partisan people...all they care about is control. They'll sacrifice a few restaurants, a few landmarks, a few public buildings, a few houses, a few lives for what they consider their 'greater good'.

Also, most liberals are functionally retarded. They know exactly where having a Socialist mayor is going to get them, but they refuse to understand the consequences of their actions.

All this to say, Sarah Iannarone is going to beat the sh*t out of Wheeler in November. I'm willing to bet on it.

*Fun fact, I actually went on a few dates with Sarah a few years ago after meeting on Tinder. She's actually very smart and a tremendous chef (particularly pastry chef)...she's just gone totally radical and wears really stupid glasses as a way to stand out in the crowd.

What you say is true my nephew has lived there for over 25 years one of the 1st to migrate out that way.  Here is how warped his thinking is. Things Okay:  everything happening in downtown, wants no Federal Enforcement, Thinks that its only a few violent protesters and all the rest are innocent by standers, And no correlation between the 2 like they don't even know each other. Hates Trump and Washington, Loves the Bernie , Argued with me there has never been a terrorist attack on American soil when i started off with Pearl Harbor, 3 times the NY Trade Centers and Oklahoma City he acts like its the 1st time he ever heard that and he might need to fact check that. Swear to God. 
On the other hand feels and wants the Government to give him Free Health Care, Free Education and take care of all his needs . But other than that screw them and stay out of his live and the people of Portland's . Hates the POPO also.
