We all know of the great victories of the BRM, but I never knew about the 1972 WS (how it went down, just assumed the great A's steam rolled us).  What a great, well played series.  Dick Williams squeezed out every ounce of his club to win that series with some really creative managing moves.  I also never knew Reggie Jackson was injured and didn't play.  Without Jackson, Reds were clearly the better team IMO.  They won game 6, 8-1 to force a game 7.  Every game in the series was a 1 run game except game 6.  Gene Tenace.  Are you kidding me? Unbelievable.  Funny to see that the double steal was actually employed on a few occasions.  A's were successful on getting a score out of one of 'em.

Now I can see Reds' fans angst in 1975.  I was just a little twerp, I didn't know about the heart breaking manner of the '72 WS.  Sooooo close.  I can only imagine the sick feeling after seeing Fisk's game 6 winning home run stay fair.  Winning that game 7 on the road after that was gut check city.

You had the Orioles in series from 69-71 and A's in 72-73-74.   A's had a great team but they played out there ass that 72 series.  Gene Tenace never played that good again.  Joe Rudi made some hellacious catches, Johnny Bench called out on 3rd strike with FAKE ball four pass where catcher jumped back in and got the strike, A's just had it going but they were paid back in 1990 Smile

Seemed like every significant break went the A's way.  I saw Concepcion get thrown out at second, and even before the replay I was thinking he wasn't even touched.   Again though, Gene Tenace???  Wasn't there another catcher named Gene Tennet, or am I just thinking that's what they were saying all those years when they were really saying Tenace?

Looked like the Reds did everything but actually win that 72 series.    Again though, Williams managed the ***** out of that series.

Dick Williams was a good manager and the A's had great talent.   Teams don't go to 3 straight WS without great talent like Catfish Hunter and Rollie Fingers.  Only ONE Tenace.  No Tenet.

I guess youtube is helping those who are having MLB withdrawal. I keep getting recommendations for former WS. I watched Game #7 of the 1960 WS. What a game. Pirates win it with a walk off dinger. I have the 1970 game #7 WS on now. Reds vs Orioles.

Next up the 1977 Game #6 WS. Dodgers vs Yankees

Youtube search mlb vault.
The America, and the American Military, that you once knew is gone.
