Trump's Iran Policy: What is the End Game?
#46
" Starving Iran of cash to support its proxy wars is smart, but so far hasn't had a huge effect, has it?"

And thus giving them billions in sequestered funds would be dumb, no?

The "malware" was about their centrifuges, which may not be evidence for a nuclear weapons program.

Everything you ever wanted to know about Iran, the JCPOA and everything else. But werenâ€t afraid to ask.

That is not remotely "everything I wanted to know" about the JCPOA.  It's a top line summary at best.

Of course, Iran was given everything up front so even if they didn't comply they would not suffer.

And their missile testing likely accelerated because of the infusion of funds.  This was a comically bad agreement whose sole purpose was to get Kerry a Nobel.

By 2017, the International Atomic Energy Agency had issued 4 reports that verified Iran was in compliance with JCPOA. They had downsized their nuclear program, both the peaceful uses and presumably the more sinister aspects.  They were under inspections and monitoring. They was even after Trump had been elected and signaled that we were reneging. The deal wasnâ€t a slam dunk win for the US but when is it ever?  Even Trumps hard ass negotiations have a downside, donâ€t you think?  Farm bailouts to cover for the tariffs. Increased prices for US consumers. Thereâ€s never a clear cut winner. But you seem to want your cake and eat it to. The glass could have been half full if you didnâ€t focus at the things we didnâ€t get.

It was a joke. Nothing, that I could dig up on the Internet, would ever satisfy you. Youâ€re just too smart for that.

I ask simple questions with tough answers, like "Did Iran have an active nuclear weapons program?"

Did they? The IAEA never found ANY indication of one. So, of course their "4 reports" would verify they did not have one as they never found one. Ever.

But just inform us of what benefit the US accrued from this agreement.

At the time, the Obama administration said its intent was to set back Iranâ€s nuclear program so that if Iran were to sprint toward producing enough fissile material for a weapon—an indicator known as “breakout time”—it would take at least a year, up from just a few weeks. So they got time. Time for a future US administration to formulate a response that was months, not weeks in the making. To respond to a imminent/future Iranian nuclear threat. Remember when Bibi held up the 93% complete storyboard?

The got time, supposedly, to prevent Iran from doing what Iran claimed it was not attempting, and the IAEA found zero evidence they were attempting it as well.

In return, Iran got many billions. But we somehow stopped Iran from doing something it claimed it was not attempting.

If they were, they were lying, and likely are still doing it as it remains entirely covert.

This is the height of illogic.

And they got legitimacy......the deal gave them that as well.

Iran got a lot, relief from sanctions being huge for them.

The US got .... nothing, not a thing of real substance, nothing at all.

We hindered them from doing what they claim they were not doing.

Here is a possible scenario of events consistent with what is known:

1. Iran suspends nuclear weapons program circa 2003 because they realize they have no delivery system but they have already the technical means to assemble a device.
2. The develop centrifuges so as to generate their own reactor fuel as is allowed under the NNPT.
3. They focus on missile testing so as to develop a missile with the throw weight and range needed for a nuclear weapon, including work on reentry vehicles. (Note that a long range missile without a nuclear warhead is fairly limited in use.)
4. The US et al. offer relief from sanctions and billions of dollars if they will "suspend" their weapons program, which was already suspended anyway. Iran can still develop missile technology they know they need.
5. Iran continues plutonium production they will need for an actual weapon and the IAEA never finds it, so there is no reason for them to stop that either.
6. With new funds, they can accelerate all their efforts.

Win win for Iran. Nothing for the US.
