The Hamilton Impact
Marc Givler • BuckeyeGrove @MarcGivlerBG Ohio State landed commitment No. 12 on Sunday afternoon in Pickerington (Ohio) Central defensive lineman Ty Hamilton, putting the Buckeyes on the board along the defensive line in the 2020 class. What Ohio State is getting Ty Hamilton has steadily developed into one of the top defensive linemen in the state of Ohio over the past two years. A linebacker early in his high school career, a growth spurt and filling out his frame has made his future one that will have him putting a hand on the ground. Hamilton may not be done developing, however. He has the look of a prospect that could still be growing, which will dictate whether or not he stays out on the edge at the college level or whether has to kick inside and play tackle, as his brother Davon does for the Buckeyes. Hamilton has a very quick first step at 250+ pounds and the best thing you can say about him is that along with the physical growth he has undergone over the past couple of years, he has steadily improved as football player every single year which is a tribute to his work ethic. With a bit of a new look on defense now for the Buckeyes, Hamilton is probably going to end up as a strong-side end type, but that could change if he continues to grow. In the past, Ohio State has essentially not distinguished between strong and weak side defensive ends, but with Greg Mattison now coordinating the defense, that is likely to change. What it means for recruiting Ohio State is going to take at least three, and maybe four, defensive linemen in the 2020 class so with all of the guys they are bringing in this month, it was important to get on the board with at least one and they have now done that. Hamilton isn't too different from many of the other targets at this stage in terms of long term position questions. He could stay outside or slide inside depending on how his body reacts to the strength and conditioning program, which is the same question that is being debated about guys like Jacolbe Cowan and Kedrick Bingley-Jones. The Buckeyes will continue to recruit Cowan and Bingley-Jones, and of course Darrion Henry, hard and could have an answer from at least two of them by the end of the summer. In a perfect world, Larry Johnson and company would have three commitments along the defensive line going into the fall and then be able to chase a guy like Desmond Evans without much risk. |
