I tell no one I make it and somehow my brothers sniff it out and they know I am making it and want me to save them some. We ate this ***** growing up because well it was poor people food and we got away from it for years then I remember having a taste for it when I was in my early 30's and been making it since. My kids love it though my daughter stopped eating it for a while when she found out what was in there. My Mom used to Coat and Fry Chicken Gizzards and Hearts on Friday nights. Hmmmm GooooodÂ
She wasn't Italian more of a Louisiana Scottish redneck, Who could Fry anything.
She improvised that from my Italian Grandma on my Dads side.Â

Chili does that to me , Had it Sunday over Spaghetti with Franks Red Hot Sauce as part of my recipe. Covered with a dab of Sour Cream and Cheese ..Â

We struggled also when i was young. I never want to eat Spam ever again or Fake Mashed Potato's out of a Box...... That is a neat story, thank you for sharing.  Yeah I think the Italian part of it was putting the sauce on it like a stew. To be honest it was just plain ole poor people food. I had 6 other siblings and a dad who passed way too early. I would go with my mom to the butchers and well that stuff was so much cheaper per pound. Yeah the liver is very acquired and my friends won't eat it because of it. When I was little they would sell the lungs too oh that stuff was so bad which is why when we got older we would not eat the stuff. Like other things once my mom passed I started to miss some of that old time food. My sisters still won't touch the stuff.
Next month I make Polenta for New Years. All it is is Mush but we put sauce on it and some ground sausage. In the mornings if there is any left we put syrup on the unsauced sections and eat it for breakfast.

OK speaking of some old time food I am making a crock pot favorite in out household this time of year. I buy Isaly's chip chopped ham and Isaly's barbeque sauce and throw it in the crock pot. Let it heat up and serve it on some fresh kaiser rolls. Dropped some potatoes in the deep fryer to have on the side.
Isaly's was a Youngstown based company who went out of business years ago.  Anyone heard of Isaly's?  Obviously the dish can be made with any old chip chopped ham.
Speaking of Youngstown based companies anyone hear of Schwebels bakery or do they sell Schwebels bread in your neck of the woods. Schwebels actually started in my hometown in Campbell by the Schwebels family who sold it our of their home.
Final question is did or does anyone eat fried balogna??
My questions areÂ
1. What do you think of this dish?
2. Anyone hear of Isaly's before?Â
3. Anyone eat fried balogna?
4.  Do you have Schwebels bread in your neck of the woods?

Bought some of the stuff today to make the 7 fishes for Christmas Eve. Â
Got some of the squid (already cleaned) to make the calamari
I got the tilapia which we do for the medigans (Americans) in the family. We do that blackened.
Got 6 pounds of shrimp.
Got the tomato sauce (still have to make) and bought the anchovies and octopus which will be used to flavor the sauce.
Still have to purchase the dried cod which will be used to make bacala
Having a hard time locating lake smelts (which I will be preparing using our 100 year old recipie.
Final purchase will be 5 pounds of crab legs.
When I was a kid we would make eel?? Anyone else's family ever do this? Oh the bad experiences with this.
