Hunter Biden is indicted on 9 tax charges, adding to gun charges in a special counsel investigation

ASHINGTON (AP) — Hunter Biden was indicted on nine tax charges in California as a special counsel investigation into the business dealings of President Joe Biden’s son intensifies against the backdrop of the 2024 election.

The new charges filed Thursday — three felonies and six misdemeanors — are in addition to federal firearms charges in Delaware alleging Hunter Biden broke laws against drug users having guns in 2018. They come after the implosion of a plea deal over the summer that would have spared him jail time, putting the case on track to a possible trial as his father campaigns for reelection.

Hunter Biden “spent millions of dollars on an extravagant lifestyle rather than paying his tax bills,” special counsel David Weiss said in a statement. The charges are centered on at least $1.4 million in taxes Hunter Biden owed during between 2016 and 2019, a period where he has acknowledged struggling with addiction. The back taxes have since been paid.

Where is the FARA charge?  That is the charge that involves the flow of the money and discuss who  in the Obozzo adm knew of Bidens dealings or why they did not know of the vp's dealings.

You can thank 3 people for this charge despite the DOJ trying to avoid nailing the POS.   Those whistle blowers and the judge in Delaware who questioned the easy plea deal offer to Biden over gun charges.   The fact she questioned the deal for immunity over future charges and Biden lawyers saying rip it up led to this.   This may throw him in jail and get Big Joe in trouble to point he doesn't run........all of which the dems are silently hoping for in terms of Joe bowing out and the lying machine Newsom jumping in.

Soup, they successfully ran out the clock on FARA.  Statute of limitations on the real stuff.  I’m sure that was just by chance.    Angel

My understanding (and I could be wrong)there were more deals and more money on  the deals where time ran out however any money he received from a  foreign govt should have involved his registration thus FARA is applicable just not what  applied here. I hope Comer and company bring this up and they demand answers from Merrick Garland.

Outside of that  I cold care less about Hunters taxes and how he spent the money. Actually how he spent the money was quite impressive.  lol

I heard he spent half of it on drugs and hookers, and the other half he wasted.

2024 White House hopefuls shred DOJ, 'deep state' over timing of Hunter Biden indictment: 'Slow-walked'
Hunter was indicted on 9 new charges in California related to allegedly failing to pay taxes

Multiple candidates hoping to replace Joe Biden as president in next year's presidential election pulled no punches Friday in response to the indictment of his son, Hunter, a day earlier.

The indictment, which was handed down Thursday by DOJ Special Counsel David Weiss in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, included nine charges alleging a "four-year scheme" when Hunter did not pay his federal income taxes from January 2017 to October 2020 while also filing false tax reports.

"The timing of the Hunter Biden tax indictment is one more sign that the deep state is planning to sideline Biden & pick a new puppet for 2024, all the while using this indictment as a perfect fig leaf to claim that the Trump prosecutions aren’t politically motivated. Kills two birds with one stone," Republican entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy wrote in a post on X.

Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley also a Republican, agreed in her own X post on the timing of the indictment, describing it as a sign of deeper issues within the DOJ.

"The fact that the Justice Department slow-walked the Hunter Biden case despite serious allegations & nearly gave him a slap-on-the-wrist plea deal a few months ago shows how damaged the Justice Dept. has become. We need to clean it out from top to bottom," she wrote, referencing Hunter's plea agreement on two federal tax charges and a gun charge that fell apart in July.

When asked about the indictment during a press gaggle in Iowa, Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said he didn't trust the DOJ, and that he was unsure how it ultimately reached the point of the indictment when it did.

"Obviously, I think Hunter Biden has a lot of problems with criminal liability. I've been saying that for a long time. I wonder whether this is something where they're going to be able to point to and say, see, you can't say that they're going after Trump because they're even going after the president's son, and that is totally apolitical," he said.

He said he expected Biden to eventually pardon Hunter and that the president's son would never "actually face full justice." He added that he was skeptical of the motivations behind the indictment.

Former Republican Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson took a different approach, telling Fox News Digital that Hunter "should be treated like everyone else" accused of a crime.

"We should stand back and let the case proceed without politics overhanging every court appearance. No one should rejoice in the President’s son being indicted, but I am a rule of law champion, and it seems our system of Justice is working even though it was almost derailed by a premature plea agreement that the Court rejected," he said, also referencing Hunter's failed plea agreement mentioned by Haley.

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's campaign didn't immediately respond to Fox's request for comment on the indictment, but the Republican candidate did address the allegations of corrupt business dealings by Hunter and Joe Biden during an appearance on a New Hampshire radio show Friday morning.

"The relationship between Hunter and Joe – who knows what we’re going to find out? Is there a financial relationship between the two of them? I think there’s no doubt the father has provided support to the son. There’s no doubt about that," Christie said. "I have no doubt knowing Joe Biden – I’ve known him for 40 years – that he would be supportive of his son’s business ventures."

Independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. declined to comment on Biden's indictment.

Fox reached out to the campaigns of Democrat Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips, Green Party candidate Dr. Jill Stein, independent candidate Cornel West, Democrat candidate Marianne Williamson, Biden and former President Donald Trump, and asked about the indictment, but did not immediately receive responses.

Attorney general says it is in public interest to grant designation to Weiss, who is handling the probe as U.S. attorney in Delaware

Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss, who has been investigating criminal allegations against President Biden's surviving son, Hunter Biden, has been named a special counsel, Attorney General Merrick Garland said Friday. Weiss made the request to be special counsel to Garland on Tuesday of this week.

Weiss, a Trump appointee as U.S. attorney who was retained during the Biden administration, has been investigating Hunter Biden since 2019. He reached a tentative plea deal with Hunter Biden, but it collapsed amid scrutiny from a Delaware federal judge.

The order of appointment for Weiss to serve as special counsel authorizes him to "conduct the ongoing investigation described above, as well as any matters that arose from that investigation or may arise."

The order gives Weiss the authority to "prosecute federal crimes in any federal judicial district arising from the investigation of these matters."

Attorney General Garland said Weiss requested the special counsel status earlier this week after determining that "in his judgment, his investigation has reached a stage at which he should continue his work as Special Counsel and he asked to be so appointed."

Weiss will produce a report at the end of his investigation pursuant with special counsel regulations. Garland said he would make that report public consistent with the law and Justice Department policy.

The development comes just weeks after the judge in the Hunter Biden case said she wasn't ready to accept the plea deal struck between the president's son and the Justice Department, and asked both parties to submit additional briefs and return to the court on a future date.

She demanded that the lawyers from both sides make clear that the deal does not convey broad immunity offered to Biden from prosecution on his business dealings. As a result, Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty to two misdemeanor offenses related to his filing of federal income taxes. He will reverse that plea if a new plea agreement meets Noreika's approval.

But on Friday, the prosecutor in the case said the parties are at an impasse on the plea deal and a trial is in order, according to a court filing.

"Following additional negotiations after the hearing held on July 26, 2023, the parties are at an impasse and are not in agreement on either a plea agreement or a diversion agreement," the Justice Department said in the filing.

It said prosecutors requested Biden's position on Aug. 9 and asked for it by Aug. 11. Biden's lawyers said they needed an extension until Aug. 14, "which the Government declined." Bide had not yet provided his position, the filing said.

"As a result, the Government respectfully requests that the Court vacate its briefing order since there is no longer a plea agreement or diversion agreement for the Court to consider," the filing said.

Earlier this year, Hunter Biden agreed to plead guilty to two misdemeanor offenses related to his filing of federal income taxes. Federal authorities also charged him with a felony firearm offense, for which he agreed to enter a pretrial diversion agreement that allows him to avoid prosecution.

According to David Weiss, the Trump-appointed Delaware U.S. attorney, Biden did not pay federal income taxes for either 2017 or 2018, despite owing more than $100,000 in taxes each year. Additionally, in October 2018 Biden possessed a firearm despite knowing he was an unlawful user of and addicted to a controlled substance, Weiss' office said.

Biden faced a maximum penalty of 12 months in prison on each of the tax charges and a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison on the firearm charge, but Weiss' office noted that actual sentences determined by judges are typically less than the maximums. A source familiar with the deal said the Justice Department had agreed to recommend probation on the tax charges but a judge will make the ultimate decision.

Yes troll.  Garland was under pressure to appoint a SC because of the whistleblowers.  Unfortunately he is so corrupt he appointed a SC that was part of the corruption.  What do you think Biden's reelection chances would be if Weiss had actually done his job and allowed Hunter Biden to be indicted a couple of years ago instead of allowing the most serious charges against him to expire by statute of limitations?

Juxtapose this against the Russian collusion fiction that had a special counsel appointed almost immediately after Trump took office.  We had a well crafted fiction spawn a nonsense investigation that put the country through hell/divided the nation even further, while here we have a paper trail a mile long and there are no shrieks in the media (or at least there haven't been until very recently?) for a Mueller like investigation.

Trump's own DOJ couldn't throw him under the bus fast enough.  The difference between the Dems and the Repubs is to the point of comedic.  I'm not saying I want the Republicans to turn into a banana republic style political party like the Dems have, but maybe investigate things a little more thoroughly before you throw your own overboard...   again.

It's been claimed that Weiss was hamstrung by the DOJ.  Garland, by appointing him special counsel, removed that possibility and gave him full authority, right?  Did Garland have to appoint special counsel?  Do you think Biden's election prospects are better now than before Garland appointed special counsel?

Stop trolling.  Weiss is not independent and if he had any real integrity he would have refused to allow himself to be "hamstrung" by Garfinkel.  Weiss is part of the cover up and the fact that Garfinkel appointed him is proof of his corruption.  The heroes here are the two IRS agent whistleblowers who blew the lid off the Garfinkel/Weiss cover up.

Asking again....

Did Garland have to appoint special counsel?  Do you think Biden's election prospects are better now than before Garland appointed special counsel?

Yes troll.  Garland was under pressure to appoint a SC because of the whistleblowers.

But he didn't have to, right?

Unfortunately he is so corrupt he appointed a SC that was part of the corruption.

If he was part of the corruption, why is he bringing charges now?

What do you think Biden's reelection chances would be if Weiss had actually done his job and allowed Hunter Biden to be indicted a couple of years ago instead of allowing the most serious charges against him to expire by statute of limitations?

Again, the claim has been that Weiss is being held back by the DOJ. That appears to be true, doesn't it? But if Garland knew that the DOJ was holding back wise from bringing charges, why would Garland appoint twice knowing that there is a 99.999% chance that he would bring charges when given autonomy?
