What are yours?

I'll start with spiders. I hate those things, wish we could purposely make them extinct.

Palmetto bugs. Was cooking on the stove one day. Felt an itch on the back of my neck. Itched and heard something plop on the floor. Look down, palmetto bug. Those are also a bitch to kill or knock out the door with a broom. Especially the ones who are still able to fly.

Heights. This is a newer one. They didn't use to bother me much. I can look out a window, but put me on a roof, hate it.

Snakes are a common one. They don't bother me a bit. I'll scream like a little girl if a daddy longlegs touches me though.

Weird combo of scared/not scared.
snakes and spiders are both highly beneficial, I wouldn't hurt either and rather I make sure I don't harm them.
Phobias are irrational fears. I don't have any phobias. I guess I don't understand how rational people have irrational fears. Now there are things I hate like mosquitos, ticks and leeches, for obvious reasons. (I've donated blood to all 3 recently, little shltheads).  But not phobic of any of those 3. Heights? No.  I probably should wear a harness up on my platform hunting stands but I feel as comfortable as a monkey up in a tree. And I probably should cut back on ladders at my age, but I am very careful on them.  Tight spaces make me fall asleep. I was the perfect candidate when we practiced new MRI pulse sequences.

Won't go anywhere within 10 feet near the edge of a cliff, or an edge with any kind of drop off. Wouldn't even stand on the glass floor overhang of the Sears Tower with my kids.

Put me on a zip line over a ravine or lake, para gliding or hot air ballooning and I'm fine doing it.

Heights. Or more specifically, falling from those heights to certain death is what I fear. I was at the Grand Canyon a decade or so ago and observed interesting things about myself. I personally would stay at least 12+ feet from the edge. When my wife got within about 5 feet, i would tell her to move away, as it made me nervous. And when perfect strangers got within about a foot from the edge I freaked out and would have to look away.

That said, I am fine with things like Rollercoasters, as I think I make the determination that the probability of death is exceedingly low and is not affected by anything I do, e.g., panicking.

I guess there are other creatures out there, like snakes, gators, and scorpions, which scare the sh*t out of me. Kind of makes me wonder why I want to retire in Florida lol.

As for dentists, I can't stand the drilling part. But I am completely unfazed by the needle coming out or being inserted into my mouth. I usually ask them to put extra "stuff" into to me, as I don't want to feel sh*t once they start drilling.

There is nothing irrational about fearing heights. People fall to their death at the Grand Canyon EVERY YEAR.

Tight spaces. Not so much classic “elevator”. Just any place I might get stuck and rescue isnâ€t timely, spelunking, underwater caves, etc.

Odd thing is Iâ€ve done these things as a teen and young adult. But, taking my son to do these things, Iâ€ve decided itâ€s not for me.

Probably I understand being in control more than I did when I was younger.

That also would do it. But, being buried alive is an irrational fear.

Depends on the situation. A true phobia is by definition irrational. If I were at the Grand Canyon standing on the edge that would be a stupid risk. But if I were at the Grand Canyon protected by a fence yet was still afraid to get anywhere near that protective fence then that would be a phobia. It's irrational to think you would fall when you are protected from falling by a restraining fence.

I earned some of my phobias. As a kid my brother and I had the bright idea to crawl through the culvert pipe under the road. He was younger and thus smaller, he got through fine. At the juncture of the two pieces of pipe, I got caught up and was stuck there for about 15 minutes, but felt like 15 hours. I eventually managed to break through, but I knew then, caving was not going to be a career path for me.

I used to do a lot of non-technical rock climbing in my 20's, but I had a significant fall down about 100 feet down at a 45 degree incline. Should have killed me, I'm alive due to the grace of God. Got off with a few bruises and abrasions. Waaaaaayyyyyy beyond lucky. My climbing partner thought I was a goner for sure. He told me his first thought was, 'how will I get his body out of here?" I walked away from that in relative health, but now some trouble with heights after that.

Drowning has been my greatest fear all my life. I had asthma as a kid, nearly died from it. You get this feeling that you are breathing your last breath. It's hard to stay calm, which you have to do. So swimming was both a great fear and also the the means to overcome. I was very motivated to swim well.
