I just might be the only damn furriner there, maybe that's the reason, they can parade me around and call themselves an International Conference. There was a conference/expo last October I went too, I didn't even even see another western looking face out of the 10,000 or so attendees.Â
The nice thing is that I haven't had to pay to speak since about 2017. If you are relatively new, or from a small company, you have to pay to speak. Something close to $5000 - $8,000. It's crazy, never happens in the US to be sure. And because a lot of people pay to speak, their presentations are essentially commercials. But once you are established, it's free. Woohoo! And my food and drink is free, my hotel fee is discounted. Sometimes I get VIP transportation too, but not always.Â
But here is the fun part, this year the Convention is in Wuhan. I was thinking my topic will be lab security. OK, maybe better not. Actually, maybe because I am a foreigner, they have assigned me a topic, "American Pre-planning Methodology and Development Trend" in the "Modern Hospital Pre-planning and Commercial Design Innovation Practice" forum.Â
Yes, it will be boring. Actually, more boring than that, more like boring squared. Likely a prepared speech too.

All I have to do is give them the powerpoint a few days before. They don't even ask to see the script. But being an American in Wuhan, haha, someone could always cut the mic if I stray off topic and go all extemporaneous on them.

I wouldn't call it a phobia for me, but public speaking is not my favorite thing to do to be sure. I've spoke in front of crowds ranging from a few dozen to a few thousand. It's the same feeling no matter the size of the crowd. Especially knowing that that there are people in the crowd who are likely better at the topic than me.

It's the anticipation of it that kills me. Once I get rolling I'm usually ok, but the time leading up to it and the first few moments I'm an absolute basket case. I don't know how people do it. I got decent at it when I had to take speech in college, but if someone told me I had to give a talk in front of even just 50 people right now it wouldn't happen. I'd probably say I'm helping my neighbor work on his sprinkler system that day or something. Â

I noticed this first the other night on Tucker and I heard it again this morning. The first time a person's name is mentioned in a story, they say "the person is called" and then they say the name. It just sounds strange. Did I miss something about using "name"?

Actually I do OK as long as there are no problems. I always seem to have two issues when I'm speaking, one, something electronic chooses to stop working in the middle of my talk (convention laptop drops my powerpoint, mic quits, speaker quits or projector decides to change colors). Or two, the previous speak goes way over on his time and they want me to dramatically reduce my time so they can get back on schedule. Or three, both. I admit, that stuff throws me off.

Yeah, that's new. But it's been common in China for a long time. They start with. This person, surnamed "Zhang," blah blah blah...

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/do-crystals-really-have-magical-healing-powers-here-s-what-the-science-says/ar-AAZs5SU?ocid=msedgntp&cvid=800eb4b7e88b4cf38737075798f3d578
We all know someone who uses essential oils, burns sage or applies healing crystals. Being a man of science, I, of course, completely believe in the power of such devices have on a person's energy field which is called Qi in Chinese (or Chakra or some other names). Millions are instantly healed, emotions are calmed, intellect is enhanced and penises are lengthened. Why Sani has pointed out that several of his colleagues are devotees to such practices. This is absolutely central to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), there are thousands of full blown TCM hospitals across China.Â
So imagine my shock and horror to learn it's a load of crock. Yep, apparently it doesn't work. So all of those crystals around my desk is nothing more than a pretty rock collection.Â
Oh well, you live and learn.

Same. I†m incredibly shy in real life, like painfully so. Yet I am somehow interviewing for a job tomorrow that requires public speaking daily. Admittedly to teenagers but I†ll still have to get over myself to be able to do it. Thankfully it†s teaching future medical professionals clinic info which is my Boo so that†ll help.

Sounds like a challenge. Holding younger people's attention is probably going to be more of a problem. Is th is going to be a total job change and be stressful? Sounds like you've pretty much recovered from your latest medical issues.

Still have pneumonia but no longer stuck in bed. Nah, this would be less stress and better hours. Currently I work my days in the schools and then some evenings as well as call at the hospital. It kicked my butt. I would still keep at least one nursing job but work it a bit less. This job would be teaching Medical Accedamy students. Long shot, in my opinion, that I get it but I think I†d love it.

A little backstory..
My wife is a teacher, which means she does not work from late May until mid July. I'm generally up for work between 4:00 and 5:30 and, to avoid waking her up, I keep all of my bathroom stuff, hair products, razor, toothpaste, etc, in our downstairs bathroom. Despite doing this for the entire summer, I still constantly forget that my toothpaste is downstairs and end up opening the medicine cabinet to grab it when I'm getting ready to go to bed.
This past weekend, we took our travel trailer up north to escape the heat. Anyone that owns a travel trailer will tell you that you try to minimize how much stuff you bring, because travel trailers don't have a lot of space. So, I bring a travel-sized tube of toothpaste, not my normal tube of toothpaste.
Last night, I get out of the shower and open the medicine cabinet to grab toothpaste which, as I mentioned, is actually downstairs. Well, I see a small tube which, in a dimly lit bathroom, looks like my travel sized two of toothpaste. It's not until I'm several seconds into brushing my teeth that I realize it's actually a tube of triple antibiotic appointment.
