Quotes from Luther's The Jews and Their Lies
#1
I can find no fault in what he said.

He did not call them Abrahamâ€s children, but a “brood of vipers” [Matt. 3:7]. Oh, that was too insulting for the noble blood and race of Israel, and they declared, “He has a demon†[Matt 11:18]. Our Lord also calls them a “brood of vipers”; furthermore, in John 8 [:39,44] he states: “If you were Abrahamâ€s children ye would do what Abraham did.... You are of your father the devil. It was intolerable to them to hear that they were not Abrahamâ€s but the devilâ€s children, nor can they bear to hear this today.

Learn from this, dear Christian, what you are doing if you permit the blind Jews to mislead you. Then the saying will truly apply, “When a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into the pit” [cf. Luke 6:39]. You cannot learn anything from them except how to misunderstand the divine commandments...

If I had to refute all the other articles of the Jewish faith, I should be obliged to write against them as much and for as long a time as they have used for inventing their lies that is, longer than two thousand years.

Alas, it cannot be anything but the terrible wrath of God which permits anyone to sink into such abysmal, devilish, hellish, insane baseness, envy, and arrogance. If I were to avenge myself on the devil himself I should be unable to wish him such evil and misfortune as Godâ€s wrath inflicts on the Jews, compelling them to lie and to blaspheme so monstrously, in violation of their own conscience. Anyway, they have their reward for constantly giving God the lie.

...but then eject them forever from this country. For, as we have heard, Godâ€s anger with them is so intense that gentle mercy will only tend to make them worse and worse, while sharp mercy will reform them but little. Therefore, in any case, away with them!

Therefore, we Christians, in turn, are obliged not to tolerate their wanton and conscious blasphemy.

What shall we Christians do with this rejected and condemned people, the Jews? Since they live among us, we dare not tolerate their conduct now that we are aware of their lying and reviling and blaspheming. If we do, we become sharers in their lies, cursing and blasphemy. Thus, we cannot extinguish the unquenchable fire of divine wrath, of which the prophets speak, nor can we convert the Jews. With prayer and the fear of God we must practice a sharp mercy to see whether we might save at least a few from the glowing flames. We dare not avenge ourselves. Vengeance a thousand times worse than we could wish them already has them by the throat. I shall give you my sincere advice:

The irony is that John (which is who was being quoted in Matthew 3:7) is really the only truly anti-Semitic gospel writer, yet those who want to hate Jews will ignore everything else and focus only on his views.  Matthew was not anti-Semitic.  In fact, his genealogy for Jesus specifically begins with Abraham - aka Father of the Jews.

Funny that Luther uses Luke's verse about not judging..... to judge.

Wasn't Jesus referring to the Pharisees as a "brood of vipers"?

Don't believe so.  I believe it was JTB calling them that. He was not a fan of Jews, like, at all.  Jesus was a Jew.  Smile

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

3 In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea 2 and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” 3 This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah:

“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
    make straight paths for him.â€â€[a]

4 Johnâ€s clothes were made of camelâ€s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. 5 People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. 6 Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.

7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. 9 And do not think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.†I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 10 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

11 “I baptize you with[b] water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with[c] the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

Pharisees and Sadducees.  Obviously Jesus had his strongest criticism for those who rejected him including those religious leaders.  Jesus did not give a pass to any Jew who rejected his message.

Ah yes, thank you.  Jesus also called the Pharisees a "brood of vipers".

Perhaps I misread but did you assert that Luther condemned Jews because Jesus called them a "brood of vipers"?

In general he condemned them for their unbelief.  God's wrath has given them over to the sinful desires of their heart.  Today Luther would say that explains why they are so evil and such degenerates embracing the ideas they do including abortion and the destruction of children through gender confusion.  He would use that to explain why they created a massive industry out of pornography. Jesus used colorful language calling them a brood of vipers because they were always plotting against him to undermine him.

Many Jews did indeed oppose Jesus. Of course, many others believed in him.

I believe that there are many non-Christians that live Godly lives. While I understand that they WILL be judged at the Great White Throne Judgment, I also believe that Jesus is just and merciful and that many will receive salvation, including many Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, atheists, etc. For that matter, many so-called "Christians" may very well end up at that judgment and find themselves being condemned, based on Matthew 7:21-23.

Jesus referred to the religious leaders of Israel as a "brood of vipers", but no one else. Of course, he did refer to some unbelievers as "pigs" in Matthew 7:6.

A few Jews have converted.  That isn't really the issue.  Do you not realize that Jews more than any other group hate Christianity, Christ, and Christians?

No, I don't "realize" that.  You think Jews have more hatred for Christians than Muslims?
