Ohio school teachers can now carry in school

Provided the local school district also permits it.

(Reuters) - Ohio is set to enact a law that allows teachers and other staff to be armed with guns in schools once they have completed up to 24 hours of initial training.

Proponents hope armed teachers will reduce the frequency and deadliness of school shootings, which have become recurrent in the United States. The bill's opponents, including teachers' unions and the state's main police officer union, say it will only make schools more dangerous for children.

The bill was finalized 10 days after a teenager with an AR-15-style rifle attacked a school in Uvalde, Texas. Nineteen students and two teachers were killed in the massacre.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, a Republican, has said he will sign the bill into law.

The bill https://ohiohouse.gov/legislation/134/hb99 was passed by the Republican-controlled Ohio General Assembly this week. It was designed to defuse a ruling last year by the Ohio Supreme Court that said a longstanding state law required teachers to complete more than 700 hours in a peace-officer training program before they could be armed with a gun on school premises.

Proponents of the bill said it would allow school staff to confront an armed attacker before police entered.

"In emergency situations at our schools, seconds matter and tragedies can be prevented," Representative Thomas Hall, the bill's sponsor, said in a statement https://ohiohouse.gov/members/thomas-hal...ill-110271.

Armed teachers would be required to undergo criminal background checks and receive 8 hours of additional training each subsequent year.

DeWine said in a statement the governor's office had worked with lawmakers since the Uvalde shooting "to remove hundreds of hours of curriculum irrelevant to school safety, and to ensure training requirements were specific to a school environment."

The Ohio Education Association and the Ohio Federation of Teachers said in a joint statement that the bill was rushed and risky.

The bill, they said, put "educators in the impossible position of making split-second life-and-death decisions without sufficient training. This could undoubtedly lead to more tragedies in our schools."

Under the new law, school districts would have to notify parents if they decide to let armed teachers onto school premises. It was not immediately clear how many school districts would choose to allow teachers to be armed.

You do not have to have it on your hip the entire day. Put it in a desk when class starts. This is awesome for Ohio.

I not sure how I feel about this. Many, many people are idiots including school teachers. I know this as a fact. I wouldn't trust them with a gun.
I'm all for hiring extra security first. The problem with school security is they mostly hang around sitting inside the building. They need to patrol the outside as much as possible.

They do get 24 hours of training. That seems like a lot.  I mean are they going to crawl thru mud on their bellies and climb walls? But I would rather be an armed teacher than a security guard. The security guard is the one who's going to get the first bullet if he hasn't already fled as some do.

Useless. It's going to have to be in some locked box. The teacher is kneeling next to a kids desk helping him with his reading, and then a gunman barges in, then what? The teacher starts jumping over chairs, army crawling under the desks on the way to the gun safe, unlocks it, then saves the day with a kill shot, all while the gunman is trying to take him out first since he's the only adult in the room? That might make for a good action scene in a movie, but it's not very realistic.

It might not help the immediate area when they first begin, but once you hear the 1st round pop off, you can at least have something, which is better than nothing.

I carry as many of us do everyday. And not one time has anyone noticed or been able to tell. I have about 4 different carry holsters to choose from depending on the clothing i'm wearing. I also wear Khaki Pants with deep pockets that i easily slip a holstered handgun in thats barley visible . To be honest i have such concealed carry holsters that are very comfortable i sometimes forget i'm actually armed as i go about my business for the day.

This. I donâ€t trust many of my colleagues with scissors let alone a gun.

There is no good answer unless you put highly trained, skilled people on each campus which isn't possible.  You obviously can't have SWAT level skills at each school. We already have multiple examples of basic certified law enforcement failing to do their job protecting students from mass killers.  Will it be worse with armed teachers with less training?  Who knows but if there are enough teachers who are armed and motivated I would argue you will deter a lot of these insane nut jobs from even trying.

As we seen Police don't carry guns to protect you , they carry them to protect themselves.

If you are given the opportunity to carry no matter what you do or where you'er at and you don't thats on you.
RLike my instructor tells us every time : Would you rather have it or not have it if ***** goes down.

Had this discussion with 3 of my buddies the other day. They are conservative 2nd Adm. believers but don't own or train with firearms. Why i don't know. Probably because they are Catholic.

But anyway one of them asked me do you carry in Stores and Restaurants ? I said hell yes , He said you don't leave it in your car ? You could just go get it if you needed it. Huh? I said if i needed it , its probably to late for a trip to the car.

Not sure why people think teachers need all this training to carry. No one is asking them to roam the halls to track down the shooter and take them out. They just barricade behind some desks, wait for the perp to come through the door with their gun fixated on the door, and then shoot. Itâ€s not really so complicated.

The deterrence factor is being overlooked but it is huge.  Most legitimate mass shootings occur in places where the shooter knows he will meet little resistance because everyone has been disarmed.

I just don't see how letting teachers carry will hurt anything.  Some chicken schitt whacked out psycho will either enter and start shooting and die quickly or they will be scared off.  Either way, it's better than letting them enter and kill unitil they've had their fill.  Arm the teachers.  My guess is you'd be surprised how many (both men and women) teachers would agree to this.

The lock box would work if they heard the dude coming, which is often the case

one classroom may not have time… but not all teachers are going even to participate so…. Hell I bet almost none will
