Make America Honest Again
Da Braves seem to have the bounces all going their way these days.

The Reds are getting interesting. A lot of teams in position for WC 2, and 1. The Phillies seem snake bit. The bounces are not going their way.

46 days days to CFB.
The Reds are like a pesky virus, they just won't go away.  I love it.  That said, if they could just string together like 5 or 6 straight and/or win like 9 outta the next 10, then they would really have something cooking.
Reds are tied with Pirates in a very competitive division this year.   They are only 5.5 out with 2 weeks left in July and just now getting back a big hitter in Gennett and HOPEFULLY soon Alex Wood, which would be huge as he would be rested for the final two months.  WHEN was the last time the Reds were in it this late?  6 years ago.

I do expect the Reds to make some moves to bolster the pen and move some guys down to AAA like Mahle when Wood returns.   Picking up a catcher with some punch would help and an OF that can hit, too.
Make America Honest Again
Reds Notes: Puig is the hottest hitter in the game right now.  Since June 10, Yasiel Puig has been the very best hitter in the major leagues, slashing .388/.430/.806 with a 210 wRC+.

Phil Ervin is primed to get more AB and playing time: he was hitting .280/.345/.460 before going 6-for-6 in Colorado on Saturday. But over the last three days heâ€s raised his line to .361/.418/.590 on the season. This year heâ€s held his own against right-handed pitching, posting a .732 OPS. Itâ€s been his absolute demolition of left-handed pitching thatâ€s stood out, though. Small sample size alert warning right here – but Phillip Ervin is hitting .480/.552/.840 against left-handed pitching this season.
Offense hasnâ€t exactly been consistent for the Reds this season. Manager David Bell has tried platooning plenty of players this season. Jesse Winker has rarely played against left-handed pitchers. The same can be said for Derek Dietrich. Both of those two players have spent some time in the outfield, and for Winker, itâ€s the only place heâ€s played. With Scooter Gennett back from the injured list, thereâ€s one less spot for Dietrich to play on most days.

That does leave the Reds with some good options around the field – at least when it comes to finding offense. Matching up against right-handed pitchers you can have a lineup that includes two of Scooter Gennett, Derek Dietrich, and Jesse Winker starting at second base and in left field. When a left-handed pitcher toes the rubber you can choose to go with Jose Peraza at second base and play Phillip Ervin in left field. Then you have your bench loaded for if and when a right-hander enters the game.

So the question comes back around to is it time to find more at-bats for Ervin? On the surface, the immediate response says “yes”, and itâ€s tough to disagree with it. Of course you want to find more at-bats for a guy who has an OPS of .999. The more difficult question is exactly where do that at-bats come from? Yasiel Puig is hitting .388/.430/.806 since June 11th. Nick Senzel is the center fielder on the team. Both are going to be in the lineup every day.

And therein lies the problem. Itâ€s just tough right now to find more at-bats for Phillip Ervin. That is unless youâ€re going to play him over Nick Senzel or Yasiel Puig. And spoiler alert: The Reds arenâ€t going to.

For the time being it would seem that time for Ervin is going to be when a left-handed pitcher takes the mound for the opposition. The Reds have said they plan to be buys at the deadline. Plans can change, of course. Maybe a spot could open up if the team decides to move someone in a trade.
What this recent surge, and his overall 2019 season could be doing for Phillip Ervin, though, is placing his name on the “players to consider for starting corner outfielder for the 2020 Cincinnati Reds” list. Yasiel Puig is a free agent after the year. Until something changes that, Ervin has to be in the conversation to take one of the open spots in the field. Whether thatâ€s left field with Jesse Winker sliding to right, or just playing Ervin in right isnâ€t that important.

Reds MAY have trade interest with Braves for Ender Inciarte  Ender Inciarte is hitting .218/.300/.323 so far this season, and the Atlanta Braves CF is also on the injured list. So, naturally Iâ€m here banging the drum that heâ€s a player whoâ€s at least worth considering as a Cincinnati Reds trade target, because of course I am.
Letâ€s preface things by saying this - the One True MLB Trade Deadline is just two weeks away, and while itâ€s pretty clear that we donâ€t have any real idea what the Reds are going to do before it, itâ€s also pretty clear that nobody really knows what most every team in baseball is going to do. In the National League particularly, thereâ€s such a jumble in the standings that the next 10-12 games could determine the paths for a dozen teams, the Reds particularly included.

The Atlanta Braves, though, sure do look like buyers, as their 58-37 record has them atop the NL East standings. So why the heck would they move their 3-time Gold Glove winning CF?

I know itâ€s hard for most Reds fans - present company included - to comprehend just how rich the Atlanta farm system is, but itâ€s as deep as any in baseball. And the depth isnâ€t even the important part here - thatâ€s the top-tier talent it possesses. The Atlanta OF already has seen Ronald Acuna and Austin Riley emerge from their consensus Top 25 prospect status to take over spots in their current OF, and the ageless Nick Markakis has continued to rake into his age 35 season. Even Matt Joyce is around and mashing for them, too, and that doesnâ€t even take into account that they have another pair of Top 50 prospects mashing the heck out of the ball in the minors in Christian Pache and Drew Waters.

Thatâ€s quite the logjam, especially when you consider the Braves penchant for promoting players earlier and younger than most every team in the game. Itâ€s enough to have MLB Trade Rumors running a poll to determine what the heck Atlanta should do when Inciarte, 28, returns from his IL stint later this week.
The thing is, the Reds have shown public interest in Inciarte before. Just last winter the two were connected prior to the Reds trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers that brought in Yasiel Puig. Obviously, Inciarteâ€s slow start and core injury this year have likely dented their willingness to throw the moon Atlantaâ€s way, but itâ€s hard to deny what Inciarte, at his best, brings to the table if he can recapture that form.

In the 5 seasons prior to 2019, he hit .289/.337/.390 between Arizona and Atlanta, all while playing great enough CF defense to continually deny Billy Hamilton of a single Gold Glove. He racked up an impressive 18.7 bWAR in that time, too, as well as a contract extension that has him potentially under team control for 3 seasons after 2019 for a grand total of $25.5 million - hardly a dent in any teamâ€s budget for a player of that caliber should he return to anywhere close to the form heâ€s shown in previous years.
The question is for these Reds, though, one much like one Atlanta is facing, namely where would Inciarte fit in? Beyond 2019 that answer is rather obvious, as the Reds currently have an army of would-be free agents after this season. Inciarte in CF would allow Nick Senzel to take over at 2B going forward, something the team will need if Scooter Gennett walks in free agency. An OF featuring Jesse Winker and Inciarte would be a solid start, and given how cheap Inciarte is in the grand scheme of things might even allow the Reds enough payroll flexibility to pursue keeping Puig long-term to flank them in RF.
As for 2019, well...thereâ€s that uncertainty again. The idea that the Reds could be both buyers and sellers at the deadline is certainly a well-founded one, being opportunistic with their assets - especially with the pending return of Alex Wood to the starting rotation. Maybe they sell-high on Derek Dietrich and Inciarte becomes part of a 4-man OF rotation. Maybe itâ€s Scooter Gennettthat they trade, and the move of Senzel back to the IF becomes an immediate thing. Maybe the Reds cash-in on Puigâ€s white hot run at the plate, land a stud prospect in return for him, and plug Inciarte into the OF alongside a mix of Winker, Senzel, Phil Ervin, and Derek Dietrich. Or maybe, just maybe, this is the kind of trade that makes a ton more sense to pursue again next winter and Iâ€ve wasted everyoneâ€s time here - mine, yours, your cousin Earlâ€s, everyone.
Regardless, it sure seems like the Braves might be considering a move of Inciarte given their glut, and the Reds have sure shown interest in him before. And given how many times these two teams have linked up in deals in recent years - the Brandon Phillips deal, the Adam Duvall trade - itâ€s clear theyâ€ve got each otherâ€s number.

TRADE CHIPS IN MINORS?

This week is going to be spent looking at the various trade chips that the Cincinnati Reds could use over the next two weeks as the trade deadline approaches. The Reds have said that they are looking to be buyers. But theyâ€ve also noted that they arenâ€t looking to buy rental players. Anyone they look to acquire will need to be someone that helps now and into the future.
The Reds farm system entered the year as a top 10 farm system in baseball. But, the system has taken a hit. Nick Senzel graduated, and losing a Top 5 prospect in baseball hurts any farm system. Toss in that none of the top 10-15 guys behind him have really taken that next step forward, and some have taken a step back, and the system is down quite a bit. But, itâ€s not an empty farm system, either. There are certainly pieces of value, and some players have indeed improved their stock.

Top 25 Prospect Infielders

The midseason Top 25 Prospect list was updated on June 20th. Not a whole lot has changed since then. Letâ€s take a look at which infielders ranked inside the Cincinnati Reds Top 25 when that list came out:
 • Jonathan India – #5

 • Tyler Stephenson – #6

 • Jose Garcia – #8

 • Rece Hinds – #12

 • Tyler Callihan – #13

 • Josh VanMeter – #17

 • Miguel Hernandez – #20

 • Juan Martinez – #22
Thatâ€s a solid group, but only three of those players are guys that a team acquiring them would view as “close to helping”. That may or may not be important to the other side.

The close-to-helping group

Josh VanMeter is ready to help out a Major League team today. Heâ€s got some limited time in the Majors this year with the Reds in a utility role. In Triple-A this season heâ€s hit an absurd .356/.434/.684 with 23 walks and 34 strikeouts in 206 plate appearances. Thatâ€s just building on the .308/.367/.591 that he hit over the final 45 games for Louisville in 2018. Over the last calendar year here are his stats:

Heâ€s just 24-years-old. And heâ€s absolutely destroyed the Triple-A level for the last year. Thereâ€s value here if the Reds were to consider moving him.

While Jonathan India is still in Advanced-A, heâ€s a guy that a team could look at as someone who could help soon. While the 2019 season seems out of the question, getting India to the Majors in 2020 isnâ€t out of the question. Heâ€s probably ready to make the jump to Double-A right now, and starting there next season would put him on the brink of the Majors if he performs well.

Tyler Stephenson is already nearly a full season into Double-A and heâ€s more than holding his own. Like India, 2019 is probably out of the question for a Major League debut. But 2020 doesnâ€t seem unreasonable at some point. Triple-A could be where he begins the 2020 season, and heâ€ll be on the 40-man roster. Both of those things, along with his performance as a catcher give him a real opportunity to see big league action very soon.

The not-as-close but upside group

The most recent draft saw the Reds pick up two high upside high schoolers in Rece Hinds and Tyler Callihan. Neither player can be traded today. But both could be players to be named later, and then named after the end of the World Series. Hinds has played in just three games with Greeneville this year. Heâ€s been injured over the last 3-and-a-half weeks. Callihan has played in 18 games and is currently hitting .230/.269/.338 with 4 walks and 13 strikeouts in 78 plate appearances.

Then thereâ€s Jose Garcia in Daytona. Signed out of Cuba in June 2017 for $5M, his professional debut in 2018 didnâ€t go as planned. He struggled to hit in Dayton, but showed improvements each month. This season has been quite a bit different. His walk rate is up – nearly doubling from last season, and heâ€s showing a lot more power despite playing in the most power suppressing league in the minors. Heâ€s got 30 extra-base hits in 66 games played for the Tortugas this season. Toss in that heâ€s a strong defender at shortstop and youâ€ve got a valuable chip.

Will the Reds look to move anyone from the group

Itâ€s tough to say with any sort of certainty if a specific player would be on the move. Different teams are looking to address different needs and have different opinions of players. All offseason Jonathan India was talked about as a piece the Reds were trying to move. Heâ€s still a Red.
With all of that said, this group is a particularly strong one when it comes to trade value. If the Reds were going to make a “big” acquisition, donâ€t be surprised if the player going the other way comes from this group. Thereâ€s depth on the infield within the Cincinnati system.

Alright.  After a thrilling victory Monday night that saw the Cincinnati Reds (43-48) come from behind to beat the Chicago Cubs (50-44) for the seventh time in their last ten games against the division leader, the Reds look to win their fourth straight series against the Cubs tonight.

Whatâ€s even more rare than a single night game at Wrigley? Two night games in a row at Wrigley. But thatâ€s what we get this week, as first pitch will again be at 8:05 ET.

REDS
On June 30, Anthony DeSclafani faced the Cubs at Great American Ball Park and pitched six innings of shut out baseball while striking out seven, earning the win in the process. It was one of his best performances of the 2019 season. He built off that start by going to Cleveland the following week and giving up only two runs in six innings, both off home runs from Francisco Lindor. DeSclafani is starting to pitch well at the right time, and has lowered his ERA from 4.70 to 4.26 in that span.
There are two reasons that can be attributed to DeSclafaniâ€s high ERA right now. First, he had a terrible month of May, in which he had a 5.59 ERA and gave up nine home runs in 29.0 innings. Heâ€s given up eight home runs the rest of the season. Second, he has not been a great pitcher the third time through the lineup. Yes, heâ€s only pitched 14.0 innings when he gets that far into the game, but he still has a 7.71 ERA and only 11 strikeouts. Once hitters have seen him a couple times, DeSclafani hasnâ€t been fooling a lot of people. However, each of his last two starts have been his longest starts since May 6, and in both starts, he faced 27 and 24 batters, respectively.

Kyle Schwarber and Javier Baez both hit DeSclafani well, but watch out for Anthony Rizzo too. Heâ€s only 6-for-29 against DeSclafani, but has two home runs within those six hits.
CUBS

The Cubs will call up Alec Mills to start tonight. Mills has not yet pitched at the major league level in 2019, and he wasnâ€t exactly tearing it up at Triple-A Iowa. In 80.0 innings, his ERA sits at 4.73 and his FIP is north of 5.00. Itâ€s been the home run that has hurt him this season. Heâ€s given up 15 home runs and his HR/9 is at 1.69. Mills has some upside though, mainly because he throws strikes and doesnâ€t walk a lot of batters (only 26 in 80.0 innings).

Mills pitched for the Cubs during the second half of last season. In 18.0 innings, Mills had a 4.00 ERA/2.49 FIP while striking out 23 and walking only seven. He has five pitches, but threw mostly his four-seamer, sinker, and change up in what was a very small sample size in 2018.

Bullpens

Both teams should have relatively well-rested bullpens. Raisel Iglesias has pitched in back-to-back games for the Reds. He could be the pitcher who gets a break tonight; however, he has only thrown 36 pitches in those two outings. I wouldnâ€t be surprised if, in a close game, David Bell calls upon him. And the Reds should get Amir Garrett back for the Cardinals series.

Amir Garrett was scheduled to throw a bullpen today, live BP on Wednesday, expected to be ready for Thursday
Randy Rosario is the only Cubs reliever to pitch more than one inning since the second half began on Friday, but he faced two batters last night. With the All-Star break being last week, he should still be fairly rested.

Only five Reds players have faced Mills before and none have faced him more than three times. Scooter Gennett has two hits off Mills, while Phillip Ervin is 1-for-2.

News, Notes, and Pre-Game Reading
The catching situation may get more dire than it currently is if Curt Casaliâ€s knee gets worse.

Curt Casali said he'd been dealing with some knee soreness and he hurt it on one of the blocks of Lorenzen in the 7th. He says he got it checked out and is fine, will play through it
