“I donâ€t care if you have on flip-flops and Bermuda shorts, you go in,” McCraw, director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, said Tuesday in blistering testimony at a state Senate hearing.

The classroom door, it turned out, could not be locked from the inside by design, according to McCraw, who also said a teacher reported before the shooting that the lock was broken. Yet there is no indication officers tried to open it during the standoff, McCraw said. He said police instead waited for keys.


“I have great reasons to believe it was never secured,” McCraw said of the door. ”How about trying the door and seeing if itâ€s locked?”

Delays in the law enforcement response at Robb Elementary School have become the focus of federal, state and local investigations. Testimony was scheduled to resume Wednesday.
McCraw lit into Pete Arredondo, the Uvalde school district police chief who McCraw said was in charge, saying: “The only thing stopping a hallway of dedicated officers from entering Room 111 and 112 was the on-scene commander who decided to place the lives of officers before the lives of children.”

Arredondo made “terrible decisions,” said McCraw, who lamented that the police response “set our profession back a decade.”

Arredondo has said he didnâ€t consider himself the person in charge and assumed someone else had taken control of the law enforcement response. He has declined repeated requests for comment from The Associated Press.

Itâ€s strange times for them for sure, but this whole event is absolutely inexcusable…

Mother speaks about saving her children from Uvalde gunman

One Uvalde mother took matters into her own hands that afternoon when she heard gunshots while outside the elementary school.

Angeli Rose Gomez says she heard there was an active shooter and quickly rushed to the school, where her two young boys went.

It was just moments when she walked up to the school and was face-to-face with law enforcement when she heard gunshots, then children screaming inside. Gomez said law enforcement were not doing what she hoped, so she tried to get some parents to force some action to get law enforcement into the school.

Gomez said authorities were telling her if she did not cooperate then she would be handcuffed, she eventually was. She then told them she would cooperate and calm down just so she could be released.

Gomez said there was no doubt in her mind she would run into the school and save her children herself, which is what she planned to do.

Immediately, Gomez jumped a fence and began banging on a door window where she saw her oldest son's teacher. Gomez told her, "like you already have a gateway out, so might as well just come out like if I'm going to run out with him, y'all just come on too."

Within minutes Gomez is able to get her oldest son and some of his classmates out. But her youngest was still inside. She ran around the school desperately searching for his classroom.

"At this moment I'm jiggling the handle and I'm going pretty nuts like trying to get the door open and it's not gonna open, so I stand back and the cops are already on me and they're like "ma'am calm down!"

Uvalde officer asked permission to shoot gunman outside school but got no answer, report finds

The report by the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training Center says authorities missed other opportunities to stop the gunman before he killed 19 students and two teachers in Robb Elementary.

An Uvalde police officer asked for a supervisorâ€s permission to shoot the gunman who would soon kill 21 people at Robb Elementary School in May before he entered the building, but the supervisor did not hear the request or responded too late, according to a report released Wednesday evaluating the law enforcement response to the shooting.

The report provides a host of new details about the May 24 shooting, including several missed opportunities to engage or stop the gunman before he entered the school.



The lack of response to the officerâ€s request to shoot the suspect outside the school was the most significant new detail that the report revealed.

“A reasonable officer would conclude in this case, based upon the totality of the circumstances, that use of deadly force was warranted,” according to the report. The report referred to the Texas Penal Code, which states an individual is justified in using deadly force when the individual reasonably believes the deadly force is immediately necessary to prevent the commission of murder.

I watched most of that video.  I fast forwarded a chunk in the middle since, as Pitch said, it was just guys standing around.  It is amazing how many guys just wandered down the hallway and took a look, then wandered back.  

The first group in must have only paid attention to the "run" and "hide" parts of the active shooter training.  They obviously missed the "fight" part.  It's pretty bad when the guys with guns run away as fast as the unarmed little kid did.

***** cowards is what they were. Every single one of them should be fired.
