While there have been more than 60 confirmed cases of a new mystery virus emerging from Wuhan, China, UK experts estimate that closer to 1,700 have been sickened with the SARS-like pneumonia... the virus is just one of six Coronaviruses known to infect people. At the mild end they cause the common cold, but severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars) is a coronavirus that killed 774 of the 8,098 people infected in an outbreak that started in China in 2002.

Analysis of the genetic code of the new virus shows it is more closely related to Sars than any other human coronavirus.

Airports in Singapore and Hong Kong have been screening passengers from Wuhan, while three US airports announced similar measures on Friday at three major airports; San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. While most of the cases have occurred in China, there has been at least one reported in Japan, after a Chinese national traveled from Wuhan to his home in Kanagawa Prefecture.

"I am substantially more concerned than I was a week ago," disease specialist Prof Neil Ferguson said.

I’m alive! So far this virus has not affected Beijing. No plans to head to Wuhan where the center of this virus is.
Can’t believe SARS was 18 years ago

There are only 999,999,999 people to get through to you.[Image: emoji308.png] Sick

The Spanish flu was over 100 years ago.

Time flies...
So officially this particular coronavirus has sickened over 400 globally and killed 17. There are concerns that the government is understating the numbers, since the government was not forthright during the SARS outbreak. The disease has spread to Beijing, I think officially 9 people are sick, but rumors are flying about that it’s a lot more and a lot of healthcare workers have fallen ill too.

This is the time for the most significant holiday in China, known as Spring Festival, the Chinese New Year. That means hundreds of millions of people are traveling around the country to see their family. Sort of like the time between Christmas and New Years for us, but on steroids.
The government has now shut down travel in and out of the city of Wuhan. That’s huge, Wuhan is probably close to the size of Chicago.
I watched the TV news last night, a very significant portion of the time was spent telling people the extent, the dangers, the precautionary measures to take, the causes of the outbreak, how it has spread to the US, and what the government is doing about. I would say they spent at least 20 minutes on this story.

OK, how it started. It started at a long time seafood and meat market. Turns out there are some vendors secretly selling animals that are not allowed. One sales board for one market vendor showed over 100 kinds of prohibited meats for sale. These included peacock, camel, bat, wolf, snake, porcupines, various animals penises and pretty anything that could be caught in the wild.

Many of the animals were there caged and alive and were killed in the spot for the customers. Let’s say the butchering standards left a little to be desired.

This is a huge scandal in China that this apparently was not caught earlier, and especially in the East Central city of Wuhan. This is going to put enormous pressure on the government regarding food safety. They have good food standards, but they enforced at highly variable rates. This is a tremendous embarrassment to the government. Pretty much a lot of people, and especially government officials will go to jail for this, or worse.

Along with the African Swine virus that decimated the hog industry (decimated is the wrong word, since they lost about 40%) these things not only look like the government is not protecting the populace it’s also going to hit their economy quite a bit as well.

China, always enjoy your perspective whether it's on trade policy or sea cucumbers.

China Quarantines Third City As Experts Warn It's Too Late To Stop The Virus... https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/c...stop-virus

Beijing is reportedly planning to quarantine a third city in Hubei Province, where the coronavirus outbreak originated, while a fourth city in the province is planning to shut down train travel. Media reports claim that Chibi, a city with half a million Chinese, will be quarantined like Wuhan and Huanggang. Meanwhile, Ezhou, a city with 1 million people in Hubei, is seeing some transportation shut down.

As cases of the new coronavirus popped up around the globe, Chinese health officials managed to assuage the worries of the public, and the market, by insisting that the new, deadly coronavirus that emerged late last month in Wuhan had been 'contained' and that the outbreak would swiftly die down. Despite imposing some draconian travel bans, it's becoming increasingly clear that this isn't going to happen. Even after quarantining an entire city of 11 million people - Wuhan is the 7th largest city in China and larger than any US city - experts are warning that it's too late: The cat is already out of the bag.

My friend Yi's wife was insulted when I declined to try scorpion, snake, dog, bird, fish of many varieties. I've known several people who have gotten ill, two almost died both physicians, from trying street/vendor foods in Thailand and India. Old story goes "Never eat off the beaten path".

Snakes are thought to be the cause of the virus.
Yet another reason to hate snakes.

China, I too appreciate your insight.

I would imagine that the food that we import from China goes thru a more rigorous inspection.....{wink, wink}
The very few areas government is needed and tends to get things right are food, water and medicine. The FDA is an anomaly in our government.
I agree.
