My daughter has been accepted to THE. As I mentioned before she wants to major in biology and become a doctor. Things are getting busy now as far as admissions and financing and all the stuff that sucks.
She's now considering spending her first year at the Mansfield campus and transferring to Columbus her Sophmore year.Â
A- to save money on dorms
B- the smaller campus scares her less
C- just a little closer to home, and she still has access to all the facilities in Colombus.
On the surface it seems solid but part of me is concerned going off campus will make her somehow miss out on something.Â
Has anyone here done this? What are your thoughts?

Pale I have no information you are seeking.  I just wanted to congratulate you and your daughter for putting her self in such a good position. Now of course I am assuming you are not a Hollywood family who has bought their child's future. lol
Seriously congrats on her being accepted and her solid goals for her future.

My niece did this at Emory, went first to an adjunct of Emory, and it worked for her.

Look at all the drunken partying she is going to miss out on.

I did this when I went to Ohio U. Started one year in local campus branch. Last three in Athens. Party Capital.

Thank you.  Though I fancy myself a Chuck Norris type, we're just a blue collar family. Thank God she got her smarts from mom. Shes a nurse.Â
I'm happy I'll hopefully have a doctor and a nurse in the house to keep me healthy because I'm going to have to work until I'm about 185 to pay for this.

The best thing I did was start in summer. I learned my way around campus and was way ahead of the game that fall. I liked it so much I went the next three summers (I needed the last quarter to cover the liberal arts requirement). So, I was out in 3 years and a bit. I think that prepared me better for grad school because you don't get summers off there either.
I have some friends whose kids are starting at UGA branch campuses because they didn't get into the main campus. That apparently got a lot more selective since I was there.

I think it's smart on her part. The partying aspect of freshman year is over rated and she'll be able to concentrate more on actual school and adjust to the change from high school more easily. She won't be missing anything besides barfing up beer and fending off drunk frat boys.

Having majored in biology at the main campus I donâ€t think her going to a branch Campus will be a negative in any way . If anything, it might help her ease into her school work and be a little less hectic. A lot of college kids are lost their first year so having her closer to home might be a better thing for her.
Congrats!

I never understood the attraction to the "college/campus experience."  HT nails it.  What would she really be missing out on?   Gain knowledge and go make some money.  Missing out on seeing some high jackass burn his couch isn't going to put her at some disadvantage

I loved the "college/campus" experience, probably too much at times, but then I was in Athens.

In general I would say this is a good idea. Ease into things w/out freshman roommate drama, and graduate w/ the exact same degree. I'd really say it is all about her personality and what she wants. Saving $$$$$ is never a bad idea. Freshman partying is overrated anyway-she'll meet her own friends and find her own scene on campus as she goes through-and it more than likely won't be people from her first semester freshman year.

Why do people pretend that living a lifestyle like Caligula for 4 years is somehow a great campus life experience that will somehow better prepare them for life?  I think maybe there was a time in America where that (making friends, networking, etc...) was true, but by the time the 60s hit campus life turned into an over glorified whore house with baby sitters. Most people don't think that. Frats at schools where frats are big-SEC,ACC, the South are basically extensions of adult country club business and social networks, imo. Otherwise frats and sororities are just students wanting a group to hang out w/ at college.

I wasn't in a frat, does that shock anyone here? I still had a lot of fun, and I don't mean just nonstop sex with babes.
My first wife was in Tri-Del when I met her and I went to a couple dinners at their house. They supposedly were for the smart gals, but at least some of them were dumb as rocks.
I was 25 by then and didn't see much purpose to a frat obviously, nor did I have time. I was routinely running 80-90 hour days, some of that sleeping in a chair while an experiment ran. It was a rush to get done.
