My simplistic model is of course that 40% will vote R no matter what and 40% will vote D as well.
That leaves 20%, and turnout, in play. Schultz could easily capture a lot of that 20% and perhaps a bit more.
A problem for Dems is that their 40% is concentrated in highly blue states and they do less well in purple states in a relative sense. Schultz could tip the purple states to Trump.
We still don't know where the economy will be in November next year.

Conventional thinking says Schultz running would cause Trump to win. I think if he runs, the media will destroy him and force him out but even if he runs few Democrats would vote for him knowing that to do so would ensure a Trump victory.

I think Schultz's success depends on what nominee the Dems trot out. If they trot out a Bernie Sanders or left type person, then he does relatively well as the moderates don't like what is happening to their party. If they trot out a Joe Biden, then he gets 5% and is much less of a factor. Although 5 % could be meaningful.

Biden of course is prone to gaffes, some bad ones, and he may not even run. I think he's tired.
And the Left in the party want what they want NOW of course. They could split off and vote for a "Jill Stein".
It is going to get interesting. I still think a relative moderate can get a consistent 20% in the primaries, more in the South, and hang around to the convention, which I think will be brokered.
