I have used them several times with no issue until recently.   I would start off by saying BUYER BEWARE!

In early September I booked a location in Rapallo Italy.  It was a place that would house up to 8 people.  I immediately made my air reservations, non-refundable, at a cost of $3400 for two.  I then invited two other couples who accepted and one bought their air tickets.  The third couple hasnâ€t bought air tickets yet because they are either going to go a week earlier or stay a week after.

So until Tuesday, all was well until I got a text stating I needed to sign in to my Airbnb account, that the host was requesting a “modification” to my trip.  When I signed in, what they were requesting was an ADDITIONAL $4000 for my one week stay.  My choice was to accept or decline.  If I declined, my reservation would be canceled and deposit refunded.

I called AIRBNB and was assigned a Case Mgr” who said she would investigate and get back to me in 30 minutes but to be safe, give her an hour.  After 3 hours passed and not hearing anything, I called back and asked to speak to her.  They said there wasnâ€t anyway they could transfer my call to her but they would message her telling her I called and wanted her to call me.   Over the course of the day and evening I called back 3-4 times and was told the same.

The next morning, I had an email stating my reservation had been canceled.  I called Airbnb back and said I wanted to talk to the Case Mgrs boss.  They refused and I was told the host would be “punished” with a fine between $50-$100.  WHOOPEE!   I was also told the host would not be allowed to relist the property with Airbnb for the same dates.

Later on I checked the website and the property was listed again.  So I was lied to.

So the message is beware using Airbnb.  It appears if anything goes awry, you get NO help from them.

The good news is my trip isnâ€t until next August so I used a Travel Agent to find me a property.  But Iâ€m still pissed at Airbnb and will never use them again.

We have never had issues with The Four Season or The Ritz Carlton. If you're going to travel; especially abroad, pay the extra coin. I can guarantee you either would have worked out the issue.
DC is a symptom, not the cause. The cause is basic voter stupidity and economic ignorance.

You get the 3400 refunded?

I've used AirBNB a couple times, with no issues that would make me not want to do it again. Of course I wasn't in the deep end quite as far as you were.

The concept does make me nervous though for a number of reasons.

My son travels Europe and Asia (Chris Hansen) and uses that AnB all the time.  He's stayed in dumps down in New Orleans and it didn't bother him due to the cheapness of his life.   Meh...I won't use it.  I like privacy and a nice room and so forth.  I also like some security with my money.   I hope Longtooth got his money back.

Yup. I get it why some people use it. Coin is an issue, so they do what they can afford. I hope longtooth got his coin back, too.

So I did get my refund, but.......given the 3 couples going had non-refundable plane tickets we had to find another place to stay. Not quite as nice as the original plus $500 more per couple for the week. Not a horrible result and my big beef is Airbnb didnâ€t lift one finger to even attempt to help.

Want a surprise? Go th the BBB website and see how many people got screwed by Airbnb.
