That clearly changes the situation.  If someone swings on you, regardless of what you wear for a uniform at your job, you have every right to defend yourself accordingly.  If they resist, police have the right to use reasonable force to get them to comply.  Punching someone in face for resisting is not reasonable in our private lives and certainly isn't reasonable when you talk about government employees.
So wait if someone swings on you, you can defend yourself??  What if they are smaller and swing on you?  What if they swing and miss can you still defend yourself by punching them??

It's all situational when you're talking about someone behaving in an aggressive/threatening manner.  But, in this case, there is no swinging or even threatening.  In fact, the cop who punched the kid wasn't even involved with the kid at the time.
I asked you three questions.  You appeared to answer the first one.   So if someone is smaller than you and they swing on you ca you swing back.  A yes or no answer is ok.  What if they swing and miss can you still hit them back??  Again a yes or no is ok but please expound on this one.

I don't know how size impacts the law.  I assume age and size would be taken into consideration.

If someone swings on you, you absolutely have a right to hit them back....multiple times.

Yes, one can protect themselves from a smaller person attacking them. If someone smaller than the person he swings on he deserves what he gets. Size means nothing in a street fight. If the smaller dude misses make him pay with a direct shot to his throat or chin.

Because they might try to strike you again, and again, until they do touch you. There are no rules in street fights. Always fight to win in the shortest possible time. Poke out an eye, rip off an ear, throat punch, crush a knee, etc., it is all fair on the streets.

So the idea they might strike you is good enough.  What if they keep coming by your vehicle and you think they might strike it or scratch it etc??  Can you punch them for that??

Because, at the point they take a swing at you they made it very clear they intend to harm you. I would argue that you have a right to swing at somebody even before they take a swing at you in some cases.

I'll survey the situation and do the correct thing at that moment. If somebody is threatening me with bodily harm, I am going to end the situation as fast as possible. I'm trained to both survey the situation and end it if need be. Double that if some dumbass attacks my gf, her sister or cousin. Trust me, I'll defuse the situation before having to physically defend myself. However, if it does come to that I will do whatever I have to to stop that person from attacking. A throat punch tends to stop the biggest people. Can't breathe, can't fight. Now, I'm not dumb enough to continue hitting a person once that person has been stopped. That would turn me into the aggressor. It kept me from getting charged from an incident that happened in 2018 in PA.

I mentioned it to DKeener on the NH 2.0 about two fools who attacked me. It ended very quickly. 38 seconds to be exact. PA State Troopers didn't even get to the parking lot before I ended it. I might post it. Might.

So wait you are telling me even if they do not harm you, you can punch them if they swing and missed thus they did nt actually hurt you?  Then you tell me you can actually swing at someone even if you Pitch think they may try to harm you???   So it is your judgement then??

If somebody's taking a swing at another person it usually means they want to harm them in some physical manner. I have no issue with the person defending himself up to the point the other person can't continue to fight regardless if they miss or not.
