Tennesseeâ€s Jeremy Banks during arrest: ‘Where Iâ€m from, we shoot at copsâ€
Tennessee linebacker Jeremy Banks didnâ€t hold back after getting arrested last month on an outstanding warrant, telling a woman on a ride-along that residents in his hometown of Memphis “shoot at cops,†video shows.
The footage shows the sophomore linebacker challenging cops on Sept. 15 after university police pulled him over for making an illegal U-turn roughly 13 hours after Tennesseeâ€s 45-0 home win against Chattanooga.
“I donâ€t like the police, bro,†Banks, 20, told an officer.
“OK, I donâ€t take offense to that,†the cop replied.
Banks then accused the officer of unfairly harassing him, leading the cop to remind him that he had an active warrant for failing to appear in court after receiving a citation in July for driving with a suspended license.
“Bro, you got a warrant,†one officer replied. “We canâ€t do s–t about that.â€
Banks later tore into the officers in a profanity-laced tirade and questioned whether theyâ€d be able to protect themselves while not wearing badges.
“Yâ€all police are some p—–s, bro,†Banks said. “Real s–t, like, I donâ€t f–k with yâ€all. I donâ€t give a f–k. Thatâ€s why all my f–king life I hated cops.â€
Banks then called the officer a “bitch and a half,†video shows, before turning his attention to a woman in the passenger seat.
“Maâ€am, I donâ€t think you want to be an intern, because where Iâ€m from, we shoot at cops,†Banks said. “Iâ€m from Memphis, Tennessee.â€
Banks†tirade continued even after he was warned not to make any threats against police officers, video shows.
“It ainâ€t a threat at all,†he said. “Ainâ€t no promise either, bro.â€
Banks changed his tune later, saying he had never met nicer police officers, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel.
In a statement released Tuesday, Banks apologized for his comments, saying he deeply regretted his “language and attitude†shown in the video, the newspaper reports.
“I have great respect for our policemen and women, and I am embarrassed by my actions that night,†Banks†statement read. “Thatâ€s not who I am. I promise to be a better representative for the University of Tennessee moving forward.â€
Vols head coach Jeremy Pruitt said Banks†behavior reflected “very poorly†upon himself and the program.
“We will address the matter internally,†Pruitt said in a statement released by the university. “Iâ€m determined to do what I can to help Jeremy grow up and become a better man.â€
