Costa Rica has been a popular spot for retirees, but the country is potentially one despot from a dictator or some kind of revolution.

One of the worst destinations. Volcano, Central American neighbors, snakes in every corner, and poor standard of living.

Change out Hurricanes for Volcano's and you got large portions of Fla. or New Orleans

I gather folks like it because it's cheap to live there.

Most of what I have seen in Florida is a pretty decent standard of living.  Some areas obviously are very wealthy.

Political instability in CR would be a downside risk, but we might be facing that here in a decade or so.  Maybe.

I'm sticking. Cost of living isn't crazy high like the coasts. Good recreational opportunities. US level healthcare and amenities. No natural disasters to speak of. Hot half the year but I like hot. The other half of the year is basically room temperature. I see no reason to go to another state or out of the country. I guess if I mess up and end up with social security only I'll consider a cheap country.

I think if one were "scraping by" in a single wide in Florida somewhere and life simply was not good, one might consider CR where one could perhaps have a better SOL.  I don't know if you could dodge credit card debt by simply leaving like that or not.  Might work.

Of course, you have to show some assets apparently to get accepted by CR, but the level isn't that high.  Can they garnish a SS check?

I know some people who go down there and own property and stay there a good bit.  Not for me.  It's rugged.

lrrps probably has the best escape plan with Singapore.  Once the USA starts to weaken and collapse, the commies will move back into Central America and even South America and there will be risks there.  You could easily lose everything.  I am still looking at Iceland but like Singapore it's expensive.  Vietnam might actually be a good escape that isn't so expensive.  If you are going to live in a commie/socialist country it might as well be one where you won't be hated for being white.  The main thing in the USA will be to get away from the larger cities.  They are going to be cesspools of high taxes, crime and violence as police protection is reduced in most of them and gangs take over.  So Montana and Wyoming are possible options if you don't want to be too drastic and leave the country.

Vietnam is a very good option. If I had to pick an alternative to Singapore it would be Vietnam.

Those articles do not mention most expats are 'cheap charlies' meaning they really can't afford to live OCONUS.

That used to be a popular destination. Most have returned.

Those who can afford to leave should. Why stay in a ***** storm?

I'm looking forward to turning in my US Passport.

Do you intend to renounce your US citizenship?

Obviously turning in your passport would not do that.
