People amaze me with their sheer level of arrogance.
Per the article... GENETICALLY modified mosquitoes that were designed by scientists to help populations decrease are actually thriving. This is according to new research that claims the plan to create gene-hacked mosquitoes that have offspring which die immediately has spectacularly backfired and now scientists don't know what will happen next... but scientists think the new 'super mosquitoes' have properties that might make them harder to kill.

Reflecting historically on bugs and such makes me feel sorry for people living decades ago. Miserable.

This story reminded of the cane toad. In 1935, they were introduced to Australia to hunt and kill sugar cane-destroying beetles... in 2009, the toads crossed the Western Australian border with the Northern Territory, more than 2,000km from the site of their original release. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-39348313

And then I think how bugs do a service for man.  Pollination, killing other bugs...used on hooks to catch fish...making honey..eating and consuming dung and dead animals, and some people eating bugs.

Sometimes I think we hear more about science and technology's failures than we do about their successusses. That said I know this was something done for the benefit of reduceing diseases, not to mention itching. But sometimes it's just not a good idea to f with mother nature. Take away one species and you're elimanating another's food source.

SKINNER
Well, I was wrong. The lizards are a godsend. LISA But isn't that a bit short-sighted? What happens when we're overrun by lizards? SKINNER No problem. We simply unleash wave after wave of Chinese needle snakes. They'll wipe out the lizards. LISA But aren't the snakes even worse? SKINNER Yes, but we're prepared for that. We've lined up a fabulous type of gorilla that thrives on snake meat. LISA But then we're stuck with gorillas! SKINNER No, that's the beautiful part. When wintertime rolls around, the gorillas simply freeze to death. |
