Hole-y crap that's deep. By the way, it's only 23cm wide, so about 9" wide. Actually a pretty cool (OK, totally hot) scientific experiment.

They only have about 3,951 more miles to go just to get to the center.
So in about 50+ years they've drilled 7.5 miles. It's still impressive but man still has it's limitations.

The tork on the drill… How many times does in rotate before it starts to actually cut rock? Or am I picturing the wrong thing completely? . How do they get the.. spoil out of the hole?? Is spoil the word??

Good questions. The torque on a shaft that’s 7 miles long would likely be beyond the torsional capability of any metal. So it’s more likely it is one long immobile shaft with a rotating drum only at the cutting surface. As to the spoils, the traditional method for short holes is to lift the shaft out of the hole, but obviously can’t do that here. I surmise that the drilling rotating drum pulverizes the rock and that the hole is injected with water so that the spoils can be pumped out. But I really don’t know. 
The drill head would need to be regularly removed to be replaced for maintenance. I bet that takes a lot longer to do that the actual drilling time.

Well it is a good thing they are doing this because I remember in the movie The Core, we had to send a submarine type vehicle down to The Core because it stopped spinning and we had to set a nuclear bomb to get it turning again.  Now we already have the whole dug
