Hardest hitting DB ever? Maybe until Jack Tatum came into the league.

Carson also spoke with the son of the legendary defensive back Dick "Night Train" Lane, who died of a heart attack at age 74 in 2002, the same year Omalu began the examination of Mike Webster's brain that led to the discovery of CTE. Richard Lane said by phone Tuesday that he has no doubt his father had CTE in the final years of his life in Austin, where surgeons operated on what was described as fluid on the brain.
"He couldn't bathe or clothe himself," said Richard Lane, a Catholic evangelist and motivational speaker, "and he had a hard time remembering his grandkids' names. I had to take the car keys away from him. I remember getting a call in the middle of the night from the Austin police department that Dad was at a Denny's with no idea of who he was or where he lived.

"He suffered a lot and really lost all of his dignity. We went to the NFL [Alumni] Dire Need Fund; Dad was broke ... and they wouldn't help at all. He only got a $695-a-month pension from the NFL. It really pissed me off beyond belief, and what really gets me worse is that there are still guys out there freakin' suffering, and the NFL is putting a Band-Aid over a gaping wound. My dad sacrificed his life and his family just so he could be Dick "Night Train" Lane, because he loved the game of pro football, and the game screwed us over."

Good find, Neal.
DC is a symptom, not the cause. The cause is basic voter stupidity and economic ignorance.

It's sad and it sucks. A lot of players from all eras have been left broken down with nothing.
You just assume people like Night Train Lane, etc. are living a good life...and they're ashen, tottering relics that are broke and can't take care of themselves.
The NFL has billions and should do more than what they've done for all of these former players. It's just the humane thing to do.

Well, does football have to be a bloodsport?
The game can exist without destroying people and their collective futures.
I grew up with all of those NFL Films "hits" videos on VHS. I loved watching that stuff. I used to check out those VHS tapes from the library.
But, knowing what we know now... It's rough to watch all of those crushing blows. Senseless, destructive collisions.
It's not the pussification of America.
It's more like "These are regular people with lives outside of football. Let's not kill people for our own macho enjoyment that we vicariously live through."
Just my opinion.

When I first moved to the area I drove around to figure out where things are located. One place was the casino. I do not gamble outside of college football, so I tend to watch my PSU friends play poker. One dude I met was an old, crusty, hard nosed guy who told me he played for the Packers and Eagles in the early 60's. He showed me documents, I guess many called hi ma liar. He was constantly asking my name and where his wife was. He didn't have a wife - at least in the casino. He passed away a couple years ago. I saw his obit in the paper. He definitely was showing signs of head trauma.

Another - long time friend - was a chemist. He loved to talk football; especially HS football from the 1970's. He played for the NY Giants in the 1960's. Built like a tank, and still strong as an ox in his 70's. He had to retire because he was messing up in the lab. He worked for a paint company and they had nowhere to 'hide' him. His labs were immaculate. Clean and organized. He recently passed, too. Those guys used their bodies as battering rams; including their heads (spearing).

Here is a link to the average pension for pro sports.
