The Islamic world is nearly universally repressive and regressive. The Palestinian areas are pretty much barbaric. That's why they have no state and Israel has a wall. I guess that's racist to say never mind that it's true and Islam isn't a race and Palestinians are Caucasians. Whatever.
Islam is a cancer on the planet to be avoided as much as possible.

The Palestinians have no state because they have turned down, on at least 7 occasions in the last several decades, chances to end up with a Palestinian state. Proposals that on more than one occasion they proposed themselves....they turned down.

They want to annihilate Israel more than they want their own state.

The Islamic world was not always repressive and regressive.  I suspect parts of it are not today (relatively) but they rarely get into the news because they aren't cutting off heads and blowing people up.  Their treatment of the Jews often was far better than how Christians treated them back in the day.

Perhaps colonization was a factor in leading to extreme forms of Islam, but Wahhabiism is an extreme form that arose outside that, I think.

I'd leave them to it and pull out.

Turkey is about as good as it gets. By western standards that ain't too good.  Maybe Islam wasn't too bad in the early days because the rot and cancer of the religion hadn't done as much damage yet. Judaism and Christianity seem to have mellowed and evolved for the most part over the years. Islam seems to be getting more virulent.

Jordan, Indonesia, Morocco, not awful and super repressive.  Lebanon in 1960 was a nice place.

The Golden Age of Islam was far ahead of anything in Europe, and they treated Jews quite well at that time.

Europe benefited from constant wars and the need to develop military technology, and of course sea faring technology and colonization.

The Islamic world was cut off from the New World.  The Ottoman's fell increasingly behind after 1492 and 1453.

I don't know the full history of the extreme versions of Islam that have cropped up more recently.

Morocco and Indonesia? The most muslim area of Indonesia has Sharia law. The religion is just flat ugly. A cancer on the planet. It needs to evolve or go.

Everything started to change  In the late 1960s, Palestinian secular movements such as Al Fatah and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) began to target civilians outside the immediate arena of conflict. Following Israel's 1967 defeat of Arab forces, Palestinian leaders began to see that the Arab world was unable to militarily confront Israel. During the same time, lessons drawn from revolutionary movements in Latin America, North Africa, Southeast Asia as well as during the Jewish struggle against Britain in Palestine, saw the Palestinians turn away from guerrilla warfare towards urban terrorism. These movements were secular in nature but their international organization served to spread terrorist tactics worldwide.[28]
Religiously motivated groups grew after the failure of Arab nationalism in the Six-Day War against Israel. In the Middle East, Islamic movements came into conflict with secular nationalism. Islamic groups were supported by Saudi Arabia, to counter nationalist ideology.[28]
According to Bruce Hoffman of RAND, in 1980 two out of 64 terrorist groups were categorized as having religious motivation, in 1995 almost half (26 out of 56) were religiously motivated with the majority having Islam as their guiding force.[29][28]

If there had never been a single terrorist or terrorist act Islam would still be a monstrous horror.

We are seeing a bit of a transition my good Dr., from the guerilla warfare to the pipe bombs to the planes to now?  Subterfuge through elected officials, who now are telling Americans the poor muslims are being picked on, and to call them out is racist and Islamophobic and so we MUST accept them and understand them and boycott and ridicule those who defend against their radicalism.  The new approach is for sympathy and the plea to eschew the Trumpers and elect those who will help them kill you.
