When I was a kid, we'd drive across the Smokies to Grandma's house and I'd see stuff like this fairly often. I recall parents letting their small kids out of the car to feed the bear.

I wish the bear would have got a claw/tooth or two into him just to teach him a lesson.  It's amazing that someone so dumb has lived long enough to have gray hair.

These bears were used to humans. I never saw one get aggressive. We'd usually see 2-3 a trip and traffic would stop. People would get out and feed them.

They really clamped down on this and had to helo most of the bears far away from US 441. I've run across bears while hiking and once they heard me they scampered. We had to camp inside hurricane fenced "lodges" because of the bears.

I knew a guy who told me they went hiking and when they returned a bear was inside his car chowing down. They had left a window cracked, and the bear pulled it out. A ranger was called and he cited the bear for improper registration.

Here's a funny and TRUE story.  

Back in the 70's my older brother (RIP) was in Washington visiting our sister and her family.  They went to a state park.  My brother was always known as a jokester.  Our nephew, who was 13 at the time, was messing around besides a HUGE bush.  My brother told him, ''Come here, there's a bear on the other side of the bush!''  Our nephew laughed at him and started messing around and mocking him.  Then he began walking to the other side of the bush, saw the bear and HAULED ASS back to the family.  The bear completely ignored him.  It was apparently accustomed to seeing people.
