Interesting how German innovation to kill Brits with V1-V2 rockets begun by Wernher Von Braun would lead to men in space in a short period of time.

Didn't all those dudes wind up getting cancer?
Outer Space is not a very pleasant place for us Earthlings.

not sure, but Armstrong lived until he was 82 , 1930-2012

I don't believe the astronauts have an unusual incidence of cancer.
That would show up in folks who have spent months in the ISS more than folks who spent a week or so in space.

The two most powerful nations after WWII: Russia and U.S. Russia recruited ~2200 former Nazi scientists/engineers. The US recruited ~1600 former Nazi scientists/engineers.

I donâ€t think we went to the Moon. It was all trick photograph. 😎. But seriously, I do have a friend who thinks that. He will admit the Earth is round.

The Apollo program was what can be done with a mandate and almost unlimited funds. It was an elephant gun for a flea, in a sense. Everything was over built (though even so there were errors of course). I can recall following the space program very closely and though we'd surely get to Mars by 1980 or 1990.
Of course, the problems with getting to Mars are far more complex and daunting. There is an interesting concept of moving a smaller asteroid to an L5 point (or newest space telescope is intended for an L5 point). Then you have metals at hand for fabrication, and you can shield against nasty radiation events. I think the best idea for going to Mars is a one way mission, go to colonize, not visit and return. Otherwise the unmanned probes can do as much as a one time human visit. Then of course the concept of terraforming Mars to have a basic atmosphere is fascinating.

Terraforming Mars is fascinating but the human body is most likely too fragile to make the trip... eg loss of bone and muscle mass.
