I think we as Americans should know who is living in our country, both legally and illegally.  The MSM always runs with a number of 11 million illegals, I suspect this is Fake News, and it is probably extremely understated.

I don't recall Obama trying his best to keep out people from certain countries. Maybe I missed that. Maybe I missed Obama creating a policy on purpose to house kids in cages in order to dissuade their parents from coming here. Also probably missed that. It is probably racist AND political. I believe the evidence is clear that Trump wants fewer brown-skinned people coming into the country. I also think he knows that just as with redistricting, there is an opportunity to skew results and redirect more political power to areas that are red-leaning. There is no other reason to add a question about citizenship, as the court filings have made plain.

Trump will not win this fight mainly because he has no legitimate reason for asking the question, and because the courts have required him to have one. If it were an innocuous question, like how many people in your household own a car, it would be 100% up to the executive branch. I think people who donâ€t want to know how many people in the US are citizens or not are either stupid or ignorant. My company, when I was working brought a number of people in to work from other countries. Some for 30 days, some for 6 months and some for a couple of years. If a census taker showed up at their apartment or rental house, why wouldnâ€t you want to know if they are a citizen or otherwise known as a permanent US resident? Do I want Raleigh, NC or NC in general to get more Congressional because Representatives because that state is full of foreign workers? Or same for California. Should they count migrant farm workers who might be working during the months the census is taken? Do I want some other State getting more than their fair share of Federal funds than a state I might live in like Kansas?

Itâ€s a ridiculous argument and Iâ€m quite certain both sides have devious reasons but regardless, people should want whatâ€s right, not whatâ€s politically motivated.

Even you can't believe that's true. There is a very legitimate reason for asking this question. If these people are non-citizen meaning immigrants or whatever, they should have no representation in government until they do become citizen. Your last sentence is correct, count ALL of the people, BUT ask if they are citizens.

For apportionment, the Constitution is clear, you count everyone, citizen or not, and the numbers lead to how the Reps are apportioned by state.

Citizenship has no role in this central feature of the census.

Counting them is ok, just not including them in what is called the ‘Apportionment Population†is the key, and this is why the citizenship question has been on the census in one form or another for 220 years except for 2010 when Obama had Rahm Emanuel take it out completely (long form).
Obama did that so that the illegal population would be included in the Apportionment Population which in turn would impact the apportionment of representatives to Congress.
Only citizens are entitled to representation in Congress but democrats are hell-bent towards getting the 10 million to 15 million illegals counted for apportionment.

On the other hand some of the brightest people are professors. Princeton is littered with many of them; mainly in the STEM classes.

Counting the is for the reason of apportionment, citizen or not, we all count the same.

There was a 3/5ths thing at one time, but no longer.

A state with 100% noncitizens gets counted the same as one with none.
