Los Angeles (CNN)The strongest earthquake to hit Southern California in 20 years left scattered damage Thursday morning and was felt from Las Vegas to Orange County, the US Geological Survey reported.
The quake, with an early magnitude of 6.4, was centered near Ridgecrest, a community west of the Mojave Desert and about 150 miles north of Los Angeles. Reports of scattered damage, including rock slides and fires, rolled in by midday. It's a good thing damage was scattered, I presume their structures are holding up well with this level quake.

I'm sure we all saw the news this morning about Round 2. I think it's good to note there are relatively few injuries and damage is fairly modest.
The area can largely withstand quakes of this type and size. I would worry were I on a freeway bridge, or under one, when one happened. I wonder if you can feel this in your car.

Yeah, that would be pretty concerning. I'd probably jump out of the car and run for the hills. Most likely scenario -- I follow the group. Everyone else is staying in their car, so it must be ok. The thoughts inside everyone else's heads -- Everyone else is staying in their car, so it must be ok.

I'm not sure you would notice in a vehicle traveling 70 mph. You might notice if stopped, no doubt the power lines and traffic signals would be swaying like in a high wind.
We are going to SF next month, I might get to experience one in real life. We're staying downtown so I should be able to keep an eye out for human feces and syringes. Then we're heading north to Sonoma for 3 days. My two just had their birthday and are in Napa. They sent me a pic of them drinking a bottle of Caymus.
