I just found out that my son's high school doesn't teach typing
#1
I'm shocked.  It's taught in middle school, but only as an elective.  How can a person be ready and able to find a job if they don't know how to properly type on a keyboard?

In any event, I'm looking into alternatives in order for him to learn how to formally type.

All he has to do is get the textbook and teach himself by going through the lessons.  That is pretty much the way a typing class works as I recall.

I understand.  I took a semester in high school and that was that.  The school has my son 7 hours a day over 4 school-years.  I don't understand why they can't find the time to teach him to type.

Then again, it's not like the business world uses keyboards, right?

I'm going to guess the school district you live in has to kowtow to state standards on math, language arts, science, social studies, so they hire teachers for these areas and don't budget for much else.  Schools no longer offer industrial arts or home economics or much in music.   Times sure have changed.

With computers so accessible typing class in high school is archaic.
These kids can type in early elementary school.

How many high school seniors would be able to type at even minimum proficiency if they were wearing a blindfold?  I'm going to take a gander that the answer is "few".

If they develop a keyboard shaped like a phone and made for two thumbs, those youngsters could type 90 words a minute.

Hmm.......I think I just came up with my invention to retirement.

So? Most jobs do not require employees to perform their duties while blindfolded.

I have never had a typing class in my entire life and have functioned just fine in the working world. I think typing classes are non-value added. Skills are picked up "on the streets" nowadays.

It's a paradigm shift. I don't think it's needed. I suspect typing is a skill most kids learn by the time they enter HS.
5-6 years ago, my parents were visiting and my daughter was doing homework on her laptop one night.
My mother, who at one time could type 70-80 words/min, was impressed how fast my daughter was typing.
She was taken aback when she learned typing wasn't taught "these days".

Both of my kids had it in middle school. Theyâ€ve been using computers for school work since then and it makes no sense to do it in high school. Itâ€s also called keyboarding now.

For my daughter it was easy. She had it down prior to the class so it truly was a waste of time. She didnâ€t mind that waste as it was better than a challenging class for her in her mind.

North Carolina teachers complain about pay relative to the rest of the nation. They have a lower cost-of-living and good working conditions. And resource teachers are still used as children have music art and PE. My son took whole Mac in the first semester and he is bummed now because he got used to eating as they did a lot of cooking. Now he is in drama. I think each district is different in Ohio whereas in NC every county is the school district and there is a little bit more consistency between counties.

Yeah, Rhino. At my kid's small private school they teach 'keyboarding'. It's a semester and I don't think it's a bad thing at all. Especially if you have to do a bunch of papers as my kids have had to do. Keyboard proficiency is a general skill, but a time saver.

If he has a pc there are plenty of free typing programs out there.  Knowing how to type is an absolute must, these days.

NC teacher pay is low.  Here is a nationwide list of pay.  Aside from Maryland and Virginia the South does have lower pay for some reason. NC sits at number 46.  And this takes in the highest to the lowest districts across each state to get the average so some are really high and some are very low:

The average pay of the top 20 are pretty high and this tell me some are making a lot for 9 months work.
