Take CD for example. He was a native southerner that moved north, had kids, retired, and moved back south. So unless his kids moved to Atlanta with him, he has contributed more people to the Northern population than he has to the southern population.
Since he moved away and came back, it was a -1 when he left, then a +2 upon his return since he brought back a wife. So his net contribution to the southern population is +1. He has at least 2 daughters iirc, so his contribution to the northern population assuming that they stayed is at least +2. More than that, if they wind up having kids of their own up north.

Northerners move to the south, pretend it's not miserably hot, stay a while, and then move back home. I know it's cliched, but I don't count the south west in this due to the lower humidity. Anyway, my sister and bro in law moved to Texas in the 80s. Dallas/Ft Worth area. Hot and humid as #### in the summer. Yeah, they're moving back to Ohio as soon as they retire.

Kid #2 is in Texas now.
Kid #1 is in Ohio, wishing she were here.
The data don't lie. There is a huge and continuing migration south and west. The NE and MW states are suffering from population losses. I can't imagine why anyone would think otherwise.

I guess Kid #3, who was #1, is in Virginia, permanently.
I don't know if that's south or north, don't care. He's across the Potomac from DC.
Damn.

What does she see better in Atlanta than Columbus? Geesh, let me count the ways.
Her job is there. Trust me, if she found an equivalent job here she'd move in a NY second.
For one thing, this is a large city with large city things. And then there is the weather issue. She does not like winters.
The other one is delighted to be in Texas. The wife loves it here, I don't know how you count her, but she was 18 years in Ohio too.

I know several people that couldn't cut it in Cali, so they moved back to Ohio.
One of them had their moving van cleaned out while spending the night in Las Vegas. Lost a whole house full of stuff.

The Columbus metro has at least doubled in size since the 1970s.

Highly taxed northern states in competition with the right to work south is probably the major driver if there truly is supporting data. As for retirement? My guess is the data points more toward the southwest (west Texas, NM, Arizona, Nevada, Utah). My Texas dwelling sister says if you have anything to do outside in the summer you do it before 10AM, because it's game over after that.

What does Atlanta have that Columbus does not? Are you kidding me?
What does New York City have that Pittsburg does not? Obviously, a main thing is better weather. Another is a lot more trees. A subway system. Then you have a world class symphony, the theater, High Museum of Art, MLB, NFL, NBA if that matters, a TON of restaurants, the simple fact is when you have 3 times as many people, you tend to have more amenities, and also more problems.
I'd personally be fine in a small town if the weather is decent. To each his own. I MUCH prefer ATL to Columbus or Cincinnati. So does the wife, who is "not from around here". It's a personal thing for each of us. But the clear fact is that the south and west are growing much faster than the NE and MW. It's absurd to claim this migration thing is somehow not real.
I'm sure a few move down South and don't like it, but they are a very few. This notion that MOST move here and don't like it is absurd, just silliness.
