The Empirical Security Research Group (ESRG) is a research lab in the Stanford Computer Science Department that focuses on Internet security and privacy, online hate and harassment, and the spread of misinformation. We are an empirical lab — we build systems to collect global datasets, analyze data to better understand real-world behavior and problems, and architect more resiliant systems and protocols.

Internet Security. Real-world security outcomes are influenced by a tremendous number of factors ranging from manufacturer inventives to end-user confusion. We study how security plays out in practice and uncover weaknesses that can only be detected in the wild. We have uncovered fundamental flaws in protocols like HTTPS, SSH, and SMTP, and our work has influenced the design of TLS 1.3, the Linux random number generator, browser trust decisions, how CAs generate certificates, and how researchers notify operators of vulnerabilities.

Hate and Harassment. Online hate and harassment is a pernicious problem that impacts Internet users around the world. We study how hate and harassment is spread on major platforms and where current defenses fail to protect users, with the ultimate goal of developing better systems to help people protect themselves from online hate and harassment attacks.

Misinformation. Falsehoods, fake news, conspiracies, and misinformation are often deliberately spread in dense and complex networks across the Internet. We build large-scale systems to identify and analyze misinformation on social media, websites, and decentralized communication networks. Our work has included understanding the role of conspiracy theories in the spread of misinformation and documenting the disproportionate reliance of misinformation websites on particular Internet infrastructure providers.

Internet Measurement. The Internet is a constantly evolving world-wide ecosystem, composed of a myriad of services, network structures, operator configurations, and users. We build new systems and methods to collect and analyze data about the Internet at scale. Our work includes building scanners that identify unexpected Internet services and publically accessible cloud storage buckets, as well as developing a system that classifies organizations that own and operate the Internet.

  The problem is spending
Posted by: zigbee - 03-29-2024, 10:14 AM - Forum: ZigbeeNutHouse List of topics for discussion - Replies (12)

Democrats want to tax your home, your retirement, your everything
With $4.4 trillion in revenue, US could manage a sane budget, but Democrats want to tax and spend

The Democrats are telegraphing their next financial move: they want to tax your wealth. From provisions of President Joe Biden’s budget proposal to Massachusetts Democrat Senator Elizabeth Warren’s re-proposal of a wealth tax only for the wealthiest, it’s clear that we need to remain vigilant against this nefarious obsession.

Last fiscal year, the U.S. took in as "revenue" (primarily in taxes) north of $4.4 trillion. This is a staggering amount that is hard to get your head wrapped around, so let me provide some context. This amount is more than the entire GDP of every single country on earth other than the U.S. and China.

With $4.4 trillion in revenue, if the government had kept their spending levels equal to FY 2019 spending, the U.S.’s yearly financial position would be about break even; FY 2018 spending levels would put us in a surplus.

The reality is that the government does not need any more money. It does, however, need to be severely restructured and downsized.

Despite that, the government keeps spending trillions of dollars in excess of the trillions they take in each year and are looking for more ways to pay for their spending wish list.

When entities get bigger, there should be some economies of scale — in layman’s terms, getting more bang for your buck. With our government, as it gets larger, we use more buck for very little bang. While their spending has created an unsustainable fiscal path and a severely fractured financial foundation, you and your family are not made better off by this spending.

As spending has increased, the safety of our country has been threatened by a porous border, which has let more than 7 million illegals into the U.S. under Biden’s administration alone. Dangerous drugs are also making their way into the country, accounting for more and more deaths. Our infrastructure remains in disrepair.

Financially, the policies enacted by the government and the Fed have continued to destroy your purchasing power, with Americans suffering through the effects of inflation that reached a 40+-year high in the last couple of years and continues to run above the targeted level.

All the while, the government continues to rack up debt, and it was estimated late last year by the Heritage Foundation that 40% of personal income taxes are being consumed just by interest payments on that debt.

Today, we don’t have a financial cushion for any emergencies. And as the government continues to spend irresponsibly, they will continue to erode the value of what you earn.

In any business around the world, management outcomes like this would not only get the individuals fired, but they would likely be so ridiculed they wouldn’t be able to find another job in their industry.

Yet, the same people keep getting put into government positions.

With the U.S. financial situation being precarious and the politicians’ desire to gain more power at your expense increasing, the money needs to come from somewhere. So, Biden, Warren, Vermont Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders, et al., are trying to float the wealth tax again to see if they can trick people by saying it is targeted at the wealthy.

It’s reminiscent of when the government wanted to monitor and report $600 Venmo and Etsy transactions "for the billionaires."

The reality is that the middle class has trillions of dollars in hard-earned wealth tied up in 401(k)s, pensions, homes, businesses and other assets. That’s money that politicians see and are salivating over to expand their government directives.

They hope that they can pass off lies like the White House’s assertion that the wealthiest pay single-digit tax rates (based on their own misleading study of unrealized wealth estimates, not income). And they want to ignore that, per recent data, the wealthiest 1% paid almost 46% of all federal income taxes paid and the top 10% paid nearly 76%. Their class warfare propaganda trumps basic financial literacy and common sense.

In any business around the world, management outcomes like this would not only get the individuals fired, but they would likely be so ridiculed they wouldn’t be able to find another job in their industry. Yet, the same people keep getting put into government positions.
If they can get the population to agree to tax wealth for the billionaires, it will soon spread to the middle class, much like the way the income tax was only supposed to be a temporary tax aimed at the wealthiest Americans. How did that work out?

Not to mention that if those who own businesses are forced to sell their ownership stakes to pay the government, the entire stock market could collapse. But, as we noted, finance and economics are not their strong suits.

Don’t concede your property rights, which are your natural rights and what the prosperity of individuals in America is based upon.

Creating wealth is an infinite opportunity. Redistributing wealth is a finite exercise.

  War on Farmers

Taking control of food production, reality or fiction? Farmers are revolting across all of Europe. And Oregon wants to limit farms to “save the people.”

3 people show up at a lady's house, supposedly flashed their credentials as FBI and said they wanted to talk to her about her Facebook posts. When she got her phone to start recording and asked to see their credentials they refused to show them. I don't know if they are really FBI, but if they really are, this is mindblowing. They told her they do this every day all long to talk with people about their social media.

Maybe not FBI, they certainly weren't professionally dressed. Either way, it's scary crap to be sure.

Disturbing footage shows NYPD cop Jonathan Diller screaming in pain on street after he was fatally shot by career-criminal suspect

[Image: qns-mos-shot-014_252491.jpg?resize=729,1...&strip=all]
Slain NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller can be seen writhing and screaming in pain just seconds after he was shot in the stomach by an alleged career criminal while on the job in Queens, disturbing surveillance footage shows.

Three gunshots can be heard echoing down the relatively quiet Far Rockaway street as Diller, 31, appeared to tussle with suspect Guy Rivera, 34, near the open passenger door of a dark gray Kia Soul, according to the footage shared Wednesday by the Instagram account @ny_scoop.

Diller can be seen dragging himself behind the car and collapsing on the pavement, while Rivera falls out of view onto the sidewalk.

Diller’s partner – who was on the driver’s side of the car – then fired two return shots, at least one of which struck Rivera in the back, according to cops.

In the seconds after the shots rang out, Diller’s partner pulled a man later identified as Lindy Jones, 41, from the driver’s seat and yelled at him to “get on the f–ing floor” before putting him in handcuffs.

Another officer appears to try to help Diller – who is screaming and occasionally moaning what sounds like “Oh, God!”

[Image: cop-killed-061_04f660.jpg?resize=1024,68...&strip=all]
Suspected cop killer Guy Rivera being placed in an ambulance Monday, March 26, 2024.

A swarm of cops soon descended on the troubling scene, and several of them carefully lifted Diller and loaded him into an unmarked police vehicle.

Diller – a father of one with three years on the force – was shot once in the stomach below his protective vest, police later said.

The fallen officer was taken to Jamaica Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Rivera was later taken from the scene via ambulance. He has not been charged.

A sign a few feet behind the Kia indicated that the car was parked in a metered zone. Police initially said it was parked at a bus stop.

When Rivera arrived at the hospital, doctors discovered a shiv stashed up his rectum, a source told The Post Tuesday.

The ex-con – who has 21 prior arrests – may have stashed the weapon because he thought he was going to be arrested later that day for a different crime and wanted protection in jail, the high-ranking source explained.

Rivera was released from prison in 2021 following a five-year stint for drug charges.

He went off parole the following year.

Jones was arrested at the scene. He was charged Wednesday morning with criminal possession of a weapon and defacing a weapon.

Neither Jones nor Rivera had documented gang ties, although the fatal shooting occurred in a known playground for the Gang of Apes.

Jones – who was nicknamed “Killa” – also has an extensive rap sheet, including 14 prior arrests.

He was due in court Monday, April 1 for a hearing regarding an incident last year during which he was found with a loaded, illegal firearm.

Jones was arrested at the time, but was released on $75,000 bail after the judge balked at prosecutors’ request for electronic monitoring.
